I have a picture of a Pte Phillips from a Newcastle newspaper - July 1916. I cant see a Coldstreamer from there but there was 9197 Pte W T H Phillips who died 30th May 1916 - so the date fits .

Does any one know if this Pte Phillips was from the NE ?

(And yes I know he was SAD and therefore if I shouldnt have posted sorry in advance )

Thanks

Moor Row is in west Cumbria. Stretching it a bit for a Newcastle paper but not impossible. I used to work for the Newcastle Journal and we covered at least as far as Carlisle.

I don't know about Pte. Phillips but in checking the new online pensions documents with birthplace Newcastle, I am coming across soldiers who enlisted with the Coldstream Guards.

There are also soldiers from Cumberland among the photos in the local papers. I have wondered if they were soldiers who enlisted from Cumberland but whose parents were from Newcastle or vice versa. I believe the photos were submitted by relatives.

The book quotes ' little is known about Phillips'

I won't go into the details (that are banned on here) except there's no personal/family details.

Number suggest that he joined 1911 - if he joined at 18 he would be born 1893

that coupled with the address seems we have a match

cheers all - job well done
