Here is a German description of the battle from the history of the 39th Füsiliers....

If anyone has a decent map to help illustrate it... I would give them an E-kiss ;-)

Thanks Guy,

I was hoping it would be a lady... you will have to settle for an E-beer.... ;-)

Chris,

In your extract from the history of the 39th Füsiliers, there is mention of the Kugelberg and a photograph on page 188, as well as a 'fliegerbild' of the offensive showing both the Kugelberg and Ployon wald.

The history of the 39th Füsilier Regiment is the only source that mentions these two places. I cannot find reference in French, German or British documents of either the Kugelberg or the wood to the south.

The reason why I am interested is my Great Uncle was taken prisoner on the 27th May 1918 at Pontavert, which is very close to both of these two places.

I would be grateful if anyone knows what the French or indeed British called the Kugelberg and Ployon Wood. I hope this is possible, for example the area the Germans refer to as the Viller Wald or Viller Berg, is the Bois des Buttes.

Regards

David

Still looking for references to the Kugel Berg on the Aisne near Pontavert- fairly certain that this was the Butte de L’Edmond held by the 4 Northumberland Fusilers on the 27 May 1918.

apart from the above regimental history of the 39 Fusilers- cannot find any other references.

David,

comparing the history of FüsR 39 with Deutsche Siege 1918, the Kugelberg is otherwise known as Höhe 87.

Deutsche Siege records - II/39 had in the meantime taken Höhe 87 and penetrated into the Ployon-Wald.....................After Höhe 77 had been taken by Füs Regt 39........

FüsR 39 history records- by around 9am the Kugelberg had already been reached and shortly afterwards Höhe 77.

Thanks, Charlie- will chase that reference up in Deutsche Siege 1918. Enclosed map from Reg History of FusR 39.
