Guest Dr David Payne Posted 15 December , 2003 Share Posted 15 December , 2003 I believe I have seen written inside the main memorial building of the Anglo-French Thiepval Memorial a list of the major battles fought on the Somme. I believe there are 12 of them and they are carved into the lintel or mounted on the lintel on plaques surrounded by bronze? garlands of laurel leaves. I don't think they are the official list of Battle Honours, as these do not include High Wood. I distinctly remember seeing High Wood and Delville Wood listed. The former is of particular interest to me as my father fought there in 1916, so I don't think I would have got that wrong. Could any of our specialists on memorials help me here? An earlier more general request has been unfruitful. David.
Paul Reed Posted 15 December , 2003 Share Posted 15 December , 2003 Have you tried emailing CWGC for a list of them? As I mentioned in the previous thread, they include 'Pozieres Wood' which is both a place and battle that never existed.
