Remembered Today:

9th West Yorkshire Regiment War Diary Availability at NA

Hi

Searching the catalogue on the NA site, I can find no listing of the War Diary for 9th Bn West Yorks between December 1915 and July 1916.

I appreciate that these two sections are in Documents Online and the general catalogue holds lists much more, but these are still the only stretches of war diaries I can find at the NA.

Am I right to think that the "missing" months are not held by the NA and I should resort to writing to the regimental museum to see if they hold copies?

Cheers,

Nigel

Sorry,

Scrub that, I did a different search and it was there in a different division, presumably for when they were in the middle eastern theatres rather than Gallipoli and France.

Apologies,

Nigel

  • 3 months later...

Can anyone tell me if WO95/4588 is available through documents Online or will I have to get them copied especially?

Cheers,

Nigel

I know the regimental museum recently ( october 06) recived a grant to hrlp put a number of documents on line, as it came from Awards for All they have t have finished the work within 12 months, might be worth asking them where they are up to and what they intend to put online. I know they had transcribd some parts of the war diaries fro the 16 and 18th battalions

Thanks guys,

Glyn, I might stick my neck out and get estimates for copying the missing six months. I reckon I might be looking at about 65 - 70 sheets for copying in total. I'm sure I could afford to spread that over a few months.

John, I'll do that. Does the regimental museum have a web presence at all, an obscure one that doesn't respond to Google? Whenever I have searched for it I just get the Ogilby Trust listing and the listing on Regiments.org. I've looked at the Dragoons site but there was nothing there to link to the West Yorkshires or PWO.

Cheers

Nigel

No web presence at the moment although I assume they will have to do one at some point or perhaps not below is the bit from the awards for all press release from October 06

The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire Museum in York receives £10,000 to further its work in maintaining military records and artefacts dating back to 1685. The money will allow the museum to create an electronic archive with documents and photographs of items, such as uniforms and badges, which will be scanned and stored digitally.

Hi John

Have you any more info on this? For example will it be accessible from outside the Museum?

Regards

Andy
