Remembered Today:

Boer War VC and Hampshire Regt and Duke of Cornwall's LI

George Ravenhill of Birmingham won the VC at Colenso during the Boer War. He died in 1921 and is buried in the CWGC plot in Witton Municipal Cemetery, Birmingham.

During the Great War he served, firstly, in the Hampshire Regiment (17136) but at some point transferred to the Duke of Cornwall's LI (28287). His medal card theatre of war says Balkans so it is a good guess to say he was in the 8th Service Bn of the Duke of Cornwall's LI who spent a greater part of the war in Salonika.

He earned a 1915 star so can anyone shed any light on which Bn of the Hampshires he might have been in.

Thanks in advance

The 1st Bn landed in France on the 23rd Aug 1914.

The only other Hamps Bns in France in 1915 were the 11th which landed on 18th Dec and the 12th which landed on 23rd Sept

The 2nd Bn was in England and Gallipoli

The 1st and 2nd line Territorial Bns were sent to India

8th Bn landed in Gallipoli 9th Aug

10th Bn was in Ireland

14th and 15th Bns didn't go to France until 1916

Hi Alan,

He served as Pte 17136 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Do you have a date of entry into a theatre of war from his MIC?

I would have thought that the qualifying date was 17.7.15 rather than 12.7.15. Could be a typo on the MIC of course. Presumably the theatre of war is shown as 2b? This would fit in with George Ravenhill being in a draft of 300 other ranks who landed at Lemnos to reinforce 2nd Hampshire's on 17.7.15. Many of these men came from other regiments, notably the OBLI. Unfortunately many would not survive the attack by the battalion on trenches H12a, H12, and H13 on 6th August 1915 at Cape Helles.

Must be a typo. Theatre is 2b Balkans. I thought it was 26! Many thanks for info.
