apwright Posted 12 March , 2007 Share Posted 12 March , 2007 Hof, den 19. Februar 1915. Lieber Fritz! Beim fröhlichen zusam- men sitzen gedenken wir an dich. Roughly: Dear Fritz, Having a jolly get-together and thinking of you. This is followed by D. tr. (your faithful) illegible! Then a line where I can't make out much at all - possibly friends' names? - ends with Emil Bruder Karl Three more signatures Sch???, N??ung, H.Funck Then the darker ink at the bottom: Hast du meinen Brief auch abgegeben, habe noch keine Nachricht. Lehmann Did you actually post my letter? I haven't had any news yet. Lehmann At the top and upside-down is the Absender (sender's details), but can't make much of it. A higher-res scan would help if possible! Adrian

Anyway I shall leave work shortly to go and have a large glass of chilled German Franken wine as the weather here (Erlangen near Nuremberg) is very spring like. Cheers, Some people have all the luck, got 90 minutes left in work then I have to go home and start marking exam papers for an hour or two. So I will have to leave the mead alone tonight, or there could be some very strange grades given out in the morning Enjoy the wine Regards Andy
apwright Posted 12 March , 2007 Share Posted 12 March , 2007 Hang on, Andy! Is that just an enlargement of the original scan you sent me? I zoom in and it's all dots. Not that much easier to deciper at all. Who's got the original card? tjec? Could you scan it at the highest resolution your scanner can handle, in colour, and mail the image to me at ? Then I can apply all my contrast, negative and colour separation tricks! Thanks Adrian

apwright Posted 13 March , 2007 Share Posted 13 March , 2007 Got it all now (thanks Norman!), but it's nothing of really outstanding interest. Continuing the message at "D. tr." we have: D. tr. Elise --- [Deine treue Elise = your faithful Elise] Herzlichster Gruß, dein Bruder Emil --- [Warmest regards, your brother Emil] Bruder Karl --- [brother Karl] and the three sigs: Schaur, Neung and H.Funck (a cousin?) The sender must be the aforementioned Elise: Abs. E. Strunz, Hof Sophienstr. 33 The card was originally addressed to Torpedo-Obermatrose Fritz Funck II. Torpedo-Division I. Komp. Kiel but was redirected to torpedo boat S.167 in Halbflottille Nordsee (but you knew that already!) A pic of S.167 can be found here I wonder if they ever got married... SiegeGunner Posted 13 March , 2007 Share Posted 13 March , 2007 Adrian, I translated the other side of the card, but you got in first on this side. I do a lot of transcription/translation of German manuscript material and just wanted to congratulate you on a splendid job. Mick
apwright Posted 13 March , 2007 Share Posted 13 March , 2007 Hi Mick, Thanks very much for the praise! I can feel my head swelling already But please don't hesistate to criticise, too. I don't want to tread on your (or anybody else's) toes! I studied German back in the 80s and still work as a translator, but the old German handwriting is largely self-taught. When I was living in Stuttgart (88-92) my landlord had a stash of old papers in the celler - which I used to (try to) read when I went down to relight the boiler. The papers where documents, postcards and diaries relating to his father's service before and during the Great War, and his uncle's service at Tsingtao and subsequent imprisonment in Japan. Fascinating stuff. I wish now I'd photocopied it! Thanks again. Regards, Adrian
tjec Posted 14 March , 2007 Author Share Posted 14 March , 2007 Gentlemen, Thanks fo your help, the message was maybe not so exciting in the end, but I thought the topic on the front of the card was very interesting. As for my limited German, zu essen und zu trinken, ist kein Problem für mich. Prost. Norman
