Not sure if this is the place for this but.....

I have been sent this information about a lad from the West Yorkshire Regiment, but I can’t seem to find him on either the CWGC or the National Achieves. Am I doing something wrong? [don’t answer that  ]

"Pte. W. Sealey, West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed yesterday in a motor lorry accident at Blindlip, near Gloucester" [The Times, Thurs, Oct. 2, 1919. p. 9]

Also the place they mention as far as I know is Birdlip and not Blindlip.

It's got my ickle grey cells a twitching - which is not a good thing :D

Regards

Andy

The dates wrong by a day, and spelt Seeley but....

Name: SEELEY, WILFRED

Initials: W

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)

Unit Text: 3rd Bn.

Age: 19

Date of Death: 30/09/1919

Service No: 75058

Additional information: Son of Clarissa Elizabeth Seeley, of 40, Frederick St., Rotherham, Yorks, and the late Elijah Seeley.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: West of church.

Cemetery: BRIMPSFIELD (ST. MICHAEL) CHURCHYARD

No MIC as far as I can see. bearing in mind his age he may not have served overseas.

There is a Wilfred Selley on BMD:

Wilfred Seeley 1899 Oct-Nov-Dec Rotherham Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding

He appears on the 1901 census, age 1, at 99 Effingham Street, Rotherham, with Elijah (44, furniture dealer) and Clarissa Elizabeth (41), and siblings John William Cook (15, under groom), Frank Oswald Seeley (9), Percy Seeley (7) and Mable Seeley (4).

In other words the newspaper got two things wrong in one sentence (probably 3 with the date...)

Steve.

Many Thanks, Andy. Many Thanks, Steve.

Here is the original quote from 'The Times' newspaper. I thought you might know where 'Blindlip' was now you're in exile. It seems that both the location and name was spelt incorrectly. The photo was a nice touch too, but would you really want to be taken back to Rotherham?

"Pte. W. Sealey, West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed yesterday in a motor-lorry accident at Blindlip, near Gloucester." [The Times, Thurs, Oct. 2, 1919. p.9]

Kind Regards,

Dave
