Educated Cheltenham College and RMA Woolwich. Lieut. Royal Engineers, 1877. Served Suakin Expedition 1884, Nile Expedition 1884-5, seved with the Egyptian Army in Sudan Camapaign 1898 (dangerously wounded). Served in South Africa 1899-1902 (Brigadier-General on the Staff. QSA 4 clasps, KSA 2 clasps, MiD, CB); ADC to the King; on Staff DAQMG Dublin 1889-92; Director of Movements and Quarterings, War Office 1904-6; CO 13th Infantry Brigade, Dublin 1906-7; Major-General in charge of Administration, Aldershot Command 1907-10; CO 2nd Division 1910-14; Lt-Governor Guernsey and Alderney 1914-15.
