brindlerp Posted 7 December , 2003 Posted 7 December , 2003 Lt Col F.G.F. BROWNE Commanding Officer of the 1st Royal Warwickshire Regiment in India in 1906, wrote on my Grandfathers first Discharge Certificate, "Very Good - ????, hardworking man". Any idea what the third word is, is it "safe". Suggestions please.
Guest Pete Wood Posted 7 December , 2003 Posted 7 December , 2003 VERY GOOD SAFE HARD WORKING MAN and someone's initials
Jock Bruce Posted 7 December , 2003 Posted 7 December , 2003 I would be tempted to say 'sober, hardworking' - mainly because most of the conduct statements I've seen emphasise sobriety (and it is nothing to do with studying a Scottish unit). The writer seems to form distinct 'a's - see hardworking and man but not distinct 'o's - see Good and hardworking. I could believe that a vestigal 'r' has been lost on the fold in the document. john w. Posted 7 December , 2003 Posted 7 December , 2003 *o*e tempted to agree with s as first letter. unsure of third not sure if there is a fifth could be sole but then that doesnt read right. could well be sober but not enough evidence... John
john w. Posted 7 December , 2003 Posted 7 December , 2003 third letter looks like an L, if there was a fifth letter wouldnt there be a further flourish linking it to the fifth, and this should start before the crease in the page. John
rflory Posted 8 December , 2003 Posted 8 December , 2003 I think Jock is correct and the word is "sober." Look a the comma after the "s" word, it is displaced quite far to the right, indicating that a letter - Jock thinks 'r' and I agree' - is missing at the end of the "s" word. Regards. Dick Flory
Guest Pete Wood Posted 8 December , 2003 Posted 8 December , 2003 Jock, and others, with hindsight - I think you're right. Well done, guys
AOK4 Posted 8 December , 2003 Posted 8 December , 2003 The 'r' is missing because of the fold in the paper. The ink has worn off. Jan
brindlerp Posted 9 December , 2003 Author Posted 9 December , 2003 Many thanks everyone for your contribution. Sober it is. Regards Richard
