CWGC added the following 'new' WW1 casualty to their Debt of Honour database today – Monday 26th February.

Second Lieutenant Vincent Jerome FLYNN

4 TDS, Royal Air Force

Died 20.06.18 Age 20

Buried: Jersey City Holy Name Cemetery, New Jersey, USA

NOT FORGOTTEN

This is an unusual case. CWGC was aware of this man but, due to an error many years ago, he has never been accorded proper commemoration at any time.

2/Lt Flynn was an American citizen from New Jersey serving in the RAF when he was killed in the crash of Avro 504 aircraft (serial D7562) in Cheshire, UK. He was initially buried in Hooton (St Mary) Roman Catholic Churchyard but his body was repatriated to the USA after the war at the request of the US government.

The RAF did inform CWGC of his being due for commemoration but at some time before his body was repatriated, he was recorded erroneously as being a member of the American armed forces and therefore not qualifying for Commonwealth commemoration (a number of members of the US forces buried in the UK were repatriated at that time). His name was not included in the CWGC register for Cheshire published in 1930 nor their register for the USA. A footnote in the Hooton cemetery entry in the Cheshire register states simply that the body of an ‘American airman’ had been removed.

On 26.01.07, I submitted this casualty to MoD/CWGC along with six other airmen as a possible non-commemorated casualty. By coincidence, in the following weeks CWGC separately discovered their ancient error and gave 2/Lt Flynn his due recognition today.
