leanes-trench Posted 25 February , 2007 Share Posted 25 February , 2007 Greetings, all. I have a photo of the commanding officer of the 7th Londons in about 1916 (I think), but I can't make out his name. Can anybody help? And can anyone give me a bit of a run down on his career and awards? Many thanks, Pat

Paul Reed Posted 25 February , 2007 Share Posted 25 February , 2007 Think this is your man: Bam, Sir Peter Carizius Van Beorhmestein 7th London Regiment Lieutenant Colonel MIC here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=3 Of interest to me as I have several maps from the 1915/16 period marked up 'OC 7th London Regiment'. Krithia Posted 25 February , 2007 Share Posted 25 February , 2007 Think this is your man: Bam, Sir Peter Carizius Van Beorhmestein 7th London Regiment Lieutenant Colonel I'm not too sure, I think this may be the South African CO in 3/7th London's, Lt-Col Sir P Van B. Stewart-Bam when he was with the battalion. He awarded the OBE for service with the battalion during WW1.
Stebie9173 Posted 25 February , 2007 Share Posted 25 February , 2007 Bit of both I think! I think Paul and Krithia are describing the same man, but with South African and anglisised names. From the Times 21-12-1928 Steve.
Paul Reed Posted 25 February , 2007 Share Posted 25 February , 2007 Steve - is there another man with all those names who was CO of the 7th Londons at some point - see the second posting above which shows the name?? Ok, just seen the obit. above - looks like it is this man, but not my 'map man'.
Stebie9173 Posted 25 February , 2007 Share Posted 25 February , 2007 I think they are "both" the same man, Paul. See the third paragraph of the Obit which gives his birth names... Steve.
Stebie9173 Posted 25 February , 2007 Share Posted 25 February , 2007 He changed his name upon marrying: His full name therefore being "Sir Pieter Canzius van Blommestein Stewart-Bam" after 1910. The MIC seems to have mauled his name somewhat but would certainly be him, in my opinion. Steve.
