G W Ingall ( thread posted re which unit Ox Bucks or Sherwood) I have a photograph of the above named soldier in a uniform with Sherwood Cap Badge plus the Imperial Badge. He was, however, with the Ox Bucks when killed 1917. Any Sherwood specialist out there have any information as to whicc Battalion he was in plus any other useful information

Hi Tim

He served with the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and arrived in France during June 1915 (in the 1st draft/reinforcement to the Battalion)

I will post his MIC when I get home tonight

cheers

Mike

p.s. His regimental number makes him a pre-1914 enlistment - probably around mid-1913

Tim,

Usually, you can tell if they are 1/8th by their 4 digit 1*** or 2***. Just generally thhough and not a rule as such.

Hmmm, I not so confident <_<

For example, I would bet that the men below are from the 1/5th, 1/6th, 1/7th and 1/8th Battalions and all have the same number 1869. In fact Beresford is a 6th Battn man - the others I haven't figured yet.

All of the Sherwood Forester TF Battns started numbering from 1 at their formation in April 1908. At least I haven't found any evidence to the contrary and therefore there is a bit of a problem in assigning a battalion because up to to four men can have the same number  .

It gets even more confusing when you get to the high numbers (6000+) because there is some overlap with old Regulars B)
