Peter Woodger Posted 16 February , 2007 Share Posted 16 February , 2007 Rfle C/3750 Bareham S D 17/ KRRC is buried in Ancre British Cemetery. SDGW records his death as 03/09/1916 along with a great number of his comrades. CWGC gives Dod as 03/09/1917. Has anyone an early Register to see if this in a later scanning error/typo Peter
Terry Denham Posted 16 February , 2007 Share Posted 16 February , 2007 The date in the register is given as 03.09.17 I have reported it as a possible error.
Peter Woodger Posted 16 February , 2007 Author Share Posted 16 February , 2007 Terry Thanks for that. What is the date for the first register for Ancre British Cemetery please? Peter

Peter Woodger Posted 16 February , 2007 Author Share Posted 16 February , 2007 Terry Thank you again. I notice that at the very top of the cemetery there are 88 burials with only 2 named. This and the late date for a first register looks like Ancre was kept open for battlefield clearance very late, it was after all the only cemetery left, north of the river, in the ancre valley. Does this mean that a register was not issued until the cemetery closed? Peter
Terry Denham Posted 16 February , 2007 Share Posted 16 February , 2007 Registers were not produced until the cemeteries were turned over to CWGC by the army - after they were deemed complete. CWGC was not officially involved with the cemeteries until they were turned over to them for horticultural work, building works and headstone erection once they were 'complete'. Then the final (supposedly) list of burials was drawn up and a register compiled. Obviously, there were a small number of cemeteries which remained 'open' for late burials and these names often missed the first register editions. First editions of WW1 registers were still being produced in the late 1930s. Two registers for certain cemeteries in France were not published till 1967 and 1970! It was a major publishing task! Peter Woodger Posted 19 February , 2007 Author Share Posted 19 February , 2007 Terry Very well done, I assume it was quick because the headstone says 1916? I will have a look when I get there in May Peter
