Guest Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 Hi, I normally read from afar, but found this petition and thought that maybe there were a few people on here that would like to participate in this. Mods - Please do move this (or even delete it) if it's in the wrong place or deemed inappropriate. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Remembrance/ More details from petition creator I am forming this petition to request that a state funeral be held for the Unknown Warrior upon the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. To remember this anniversary in such a way would ensure it was never forgotten and would show that Her Majesty's Government is willing to pledge greater, and public support, for war veterans and war dead. In my opinion, if this opportunity was not taken, an extremely important part of British modern history would fade away. Thank you.
Chris_Baker Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 Personal view - I can't support that. The unknown soldier already had a state funeral. Plus ... Why the Somme? Why not Armistice Day?
Max Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 I also find it a bit strange that you would dig someone up and then rebury them just to remember a battle that he may not have fought in. Andy

Thank you. If HM Government really is concerned for the ex-serviceman, let them look after the elderly WW2 veterans better. They might also take more care of the Veterans from all the post 1945 wars, right up to and including Iraq and Afghanistan.
John_Hartley Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 To remember this anniversary in such a way would ensure it was never forgotten and would show that Her Majesty's Government is willing to pledge greater, and public support, for war veterans and war dead. But like Chris & Andy, I won't be signing. I think there are a number of false premises exist in the petitioner's information. For example, when they say this will ensure "it" is not forgotten, what is "it" and how would it "ensure" it? I also don't see how this would mean HMG was pledging greater support for war veterans and war dead. I can suggest several ways how they might - most of which would cross the "no current politics" rule. John
roel22 Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 To my opinion each country should stick to one unknown soldier, commemmorating ALL (unknown) warriors of his nation. By adding more, to remember a certain battle, the idea of the unknown soldier will lose meaning. And why should one battle have it's 'own' unknown soldier, and another one not? All fallen soldiers paid the ultimate price. No difference there. Roel
Alan Tucker Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 This is just crazy and the wording is just stupid. It also trivialises the re-introduction of a 2 mins silence on November 11th which has been very successful and stands for all those who gave their lives from the Great War to modern Iraq. This is when veterans receive widespread national recognition via the work of the RBL. It also subscribes to the Great War myth about the centrality of the Somme to the memory of the Great War which is based on the first day and totally ignores Arras and Third Ypres to name but two other 'battles'. Very naive.
PBI Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 ...will definetly NOT be signing. As Chris rightly says, the Unknown Warrior has already had a State Funeral..and why remember just one particular Battle ?.I see the Petition is enjoying Massive Support (Not).
swizz Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 To be honest I am surprised that this is the subject of a petition. Is the person who started it really advocating exhuming the Unknown Warrior from his grave, (presumably) parading him round the streets of London, holding some sort of service, and then re-burying him again? I won't be signing either. Swizz
Denis Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 Verging on offensive. This electronic petition craze where you quickly 'sign' an ill thought out petition in between putting the cat out and watching Eastenders is getting out of hand. At least the Unknown Soldier exists - there one petition calling for, amongst other things, the early release of the English 1931 census. Quite a trick considering the Luftwaffe destroyed it in 1940. Denis
Lyndon Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 Sorry, I'm another that won't be signing. Does the term "Rest in Peace" not mean anything! Lyndon

Quite a trick considering the Luftwaffe destroyed it in 1940. Denis Did they though Denis? I can remember being told that they also destroyed WW1 soldiers records, but at least some still survive as the "burned records". I know nothing about the 1931 census, but I do know that if "these people" told me it was a nice day I would phone the Met Office.

roel22 Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 I petition to delete the petition. Count me in. Although I do believe Michelle's intentions are good (having my doubts on the creator of this petition).
montbrehain Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 No leave it, let it run its course same as any other thread. just because you dont agree with it ? doesnt mean it should be deleted. If we were to take that route we would end up with a forum full of petitions. The forum owner and his moderators have seen it ? And they have deemed it passable. good enough for me . (and no I wont be signing it either .) "MO"
roel22 Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 It was Michelle, the original poster, who suggested the thread to be removed in case people might find it "inappropriate".
PhilB Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 I hope you won`t be reverting to reading from afar, Michelle, after the underwhelming response to the proposition! Can you put forward a good case for his re-burial? I`ve tried but I can`t! Phil B
montbrehain Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 It was Michelle, the original poster, who suggested the thread to be removed in case people might find it "inappropriate". I think you will find "people" are not mentioned ? And as the owner has commented and not deleted . Then the thread has obviously not been considered inappropriate. (and nor should it be)
roel22 Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 Talking about the owner: how do you feel about this thread now, Michelle?
Dragon Posted 14 February , 2007 Posted 14 February , 2007 Time to Delete this so Called "Thread"...all in Favour ?? Why? It's one of the cherished qualities of British society that citizens can petition Government on almost anything without getting thrown into prison, tortured or being disappeared. I don't care for this particular petition, but I would defend anyone's right to present one. Gwyn
kinnethmont Posted 15 February , 2007 Posted 15 February , 2007 Clearly a very popular subject for a petition, 32 supporters. I'm with the others on this crackpot idea. The Unknown Warrior represents those who fell in all battles of the Great War of Nations. He had a state funeral and is now among kings and eminent men. His Duty done , let him Rest in Peace.
