Cap and shoulder insignia's

I have a black/white photo of a soldier in a I think green colored uniform. I'm not sure if this gentleman was in the Army or Navy and whether he served in WW1 or WW 2. On his cap is an insignia which is a circle with for sections?, like north, south, east and west and a curved band under it. This has some either writings or pictures in them. On his left shoulder are what look like 2 gold push pins with something hanging in the back. I'm not sure how I would attached the photo for someone to have a look at, so am trying to describe it. Would someone be able to help me with figuring out what war and military unit this gentleman might have been with. Thanks
