burlington Posted 3 December , 2003 Share Posted 3 December , 2003 This book was given to me a little while ago. It has some really good photos both old and modern and quite a few 'then and now'. The interesting thing about it is this. As I was reading it (though it is not really a book you read- you dip in to it at your leisure), I felt that it was not quite the sort of WW1 book I was used to. And then it clicked- the author, Anne Roze, lives and works in France and this obviously affects her perception of the War. Fascinating. Will O'Brien Posted 3 December , 2003 Share Posted 3 December , 2003 I found this an extremely good book..........many of the pictures taken by John Foley have what I can only describe as an 'atmospheric' quality to them. I would agree with Burlington, not so much a book to sit down & read, more of a book to browse through when the mood takes you.
andigger Posted 8 December , 2004 Share Posted 8 December , 2004 I put this on order tonight, but it sounds like it is not readily available. Have others read/looked through the book? I like before and after pictures, so I would like to see if it does come in, but in the mean time I was curious what others thought. Andy
stiletto_33853 Posted 8 December , 2004 Share Posted 8 December , 2004 There is a certain feel to this book, but having said that i found it a very good different perspective, and as Will says there is an "Atmospheric quality to them." Personally i would highly recommend it. Andy
Marco Posted 8 December , 2004 Share Posted 8 December , 2004 The pictures are great, but wasn't this the book that proclaimed that hill 60 was the result of an explosion rather then the spoil heap it is? Regards, Marco
jayne w Posted 8 December , 2004 Share Posted 8 December , 2004 I dont know Marco as like the others I dip in & out of it and havent come across that bit yet. The book is worth it for the photography alone tho and I would recomend it. Jayne
Guest Simon Bull Posted 9 December , 2004 Share Posted 9 December , 2004 Lovely atmospheric photographs. I bought a copy for myself a couple of years ago and have recently bought one for my father as a Christmas present. Had no problems getting a copy form Amazon by return. It is also extremely good value for a book with so many high quality colour reproductions.
