Would be interested to hear from anyone who has any family link or information about Able Seamen born and bred in London, Essex and Kent who took part in the Zeebrugge raid. Many thanks.

Chelsea, also ;

MCKENZIE Albert E ONJ.31736 Ch Able Seaman RN 79D098 Vindictive Vice Admiral Dover 23.07.18 G Operations on Belgian Coast 23.04.18 (Zeebrugge & Ostend) VC For most conspicuous gallantry. This rating belonged to B Comany of seaman storming party. On the night of the operation he landed on the mole with his machine-gun in the face of great difficulties, and did very good work, using his gun to he utmost advantage. He advanced down the mole with Lieutenant -Commander Harrison, who with most of his party was killed, and accounted for several of the enemy running from a shelter to a destroyer alongside the mole. This very gallant seaman was severely wounded whilst working his gun in an exposed position.

Thanks for your replies, Albert McKenzie is already known to me thanks. I will add Edward to my list, although I would say that Londoners are my main focus.

My Grandfather L7645 Clarence Arthur Willing served in the Royal Navy through both World Wars. From 21st September 1917 to 11th January 1919 he was on board HMS Resolution and I have read somewhere that Resolution was involved in the Zeebrugge operation of April 1918.

I could not find HMS Resolution named in either ADM 137/4830 Chapter 7 - The blocking of Zeebrugge April 22-23 1918 or in ADM 1/8525/142 Naval raids on Zeebrugge and Ostende April and May 1918 and Zeebrugge was not mentioned amongst the ship's battle honours.

Does anyone know if she was involved in the operation or not, and if so, what part she played?

Many thanks

Resolution was not involved in the raid but a contingent of her crew were involved. However, I cannot find the name Willing on the muster roll. Dom

Hi

Just stumbled across this post. My Great Uncle Able Seaman Frederick Robert Scott j16005 was killed in action on the Zeebrugge Raid on 23/4/1918. He was born and raised in Wimbledon SW19 which, as it has a London post code you may consider to have been part of London although technically it was Surrey. He is shown as part of the crew of HMS Hindustan but was killed whilst taking part in the raid from HMS Vindictive. Like many others he was nominated to take part in the VC ballot. His body was repatriated and he is buried in Wimbledon.

That's fascinating Paul.

From a quick look at CWGC site- is this your Great Uncle's entry? Full of admiration for all those who took part at Zeebrugge. Would like to visit his grave. Would welcome directions if you would like to PM me. Thanks. Michael Bully.
