Gold Stripe

Recommended Posts

I am looking at my Grandfathers service record and on it it says

"Entitled to wear one Gold stripe"

Could anyone please tell me what this related to.

Many thanks

Paul

Actually, the earliest issue were "Russian Lace" - a small bit of gold braid on a khaki backing that was sewn on (this was c.1916). It was only on later issues that the metal type with backing plate and split pin to hold it all together was introduced. A search of the forum should bring up more details.

Cheers Andrew

I'll go have a wander round, see what I can find. Have to admit never bothered looking, because i thought I knew what they were made of. You learn something new on the forum everyday, must be why I like the place so much.

Just a quick search of "Russian Lace" brought up quite a few hits:

...but could it also be a Good Conduct Stripe (2yrs - 1 stripe) of braided cloth...or would these be known as chevrons?. These are also worn on the lower left sleve above the Wound Stripe.

cheers, Jon :D

I wouldn't have thought so - a wound stripe is much more likely.
