It's good that our GWF Pal Eric Goossens and his wife Özlem have seen their great work at The Gallipoli Houses recognised again, this time in the Daily Saba

"We customize everyone's experience to their time and their budget and use many hotels on the peninsula," he said, adding that "some are exceptional like Eric and Özlem's Gallipoli Houses. You never know who you'll meet there, could be a famous hobbit like Sir Peter Jackson or any number of famous historians."

Hello,

I have stayed yesterday at the Royal Hainaut at Valenciennes, it's a new 4 star hotel open since May 2019.

Very good, very nice, an impressive building and nice work after a 8 years restoration. The building was an hospital used in WW1 and until 2009. I have stayed in a certain number of hotels in France and Europe and this one is definitily on my top list. Everything is "magnifique", from the swimming pool to the bar and the rooms.

Website here:

The hospital was there in 1918...

And the same building today

Sad that Butterworth has closed on the Somme, now a private house.

Stayed there once, a lovely place, but our visit was slightly marred by a certain Antiopdean  couple. I see a new place at Mametz  has appeared on Gites de France.

Michelle, my wife and I apologise unreservedly for that!  Oh wait, maybe you mean a Queensland couple cited in a certain thread.

Tony, this would have to be very sad news.  We had a few stays there starting in 2012 and my wife emailed John last year at the height of COVID to see how he and Chantelle were going.  We got a lovely reply with an understated suggestion that things were tough.  Great place for Australians following units on the Somme as it is so close to everything that featured from March to August 1918,
