janhibberd Posted 2 February , 2007 Share Posted 2 February , 2007 Can anybody help me? I'm way out of my depth here. My family has a cricket bat that has the following inscription. Presented to Sergt J.Cains, 1st Hants Regt by the Officers NC Officers and men of H Coy for his good all round play in the matches for the Challenge Shield won by the above Coy India 8th March 1887-79 not out, 61 not out, 59 not out. He was born 1853 and he only appears on one Census, the 1881, as being on The Malabar as a Ward Room Steward 2nd Class, aged 27 and single. I have just sent for his death certificate and he was 85 when he died and his occupation was a Steward, Mercantile Marine. Can anybody suggest any avenues that I can go down, in an attempt to track him down and gain further information. Thanks

kevinrowlinson Posted 2 February , 2007 Share Posted 2 February , 2007 Not knowing where you got the James from I wondered whether he was more likely to be John Cain, b.1852 Gibraltar, serving as soldier at Parkhurst Barracks, Carrsbrooke in 1881. From ward room steward in 1881 to sergt. in 1st Hants in India in 6 years? Kevin
