Remembered Today:

47th Battalion AIF

Hello All

Yet another 47th descendant.

My grandfather was 2482 Arthur Needham, a Lewis gunner. He enlisted on 13 Jan 1916 as part of the 5th reinforcements, wounded on 3 April 1918 at Dernancourt and evacuated to England. I found a photo of him (and others of the 47th) in the "Queenslander" published on 9 December 1916 just after they left Australia for England.

A question that others may be able to answer, is the relevance of the accuracy of the inter-battalion boundary between the 47th and other battalions shown on war diary maps.

Is it likely any difference is just an error on the particular map or are the maps just a guide anyway and the "boundary" determined by the actual trench or feature location? Any comments on how the responsibility was determined for defending the front line adjoining the inter-battalion boundary?

Also keen to get on the mailing list for any future books/history's to be published.

Mark

My great great Uncle James Alfred Heading served in the 47th Btn. He was awarded a DCM and a MM. I haven't done a great deal of research on his story, but what I have found has been through a simple search online. I'd be happy to provide the medal citations and whatever else I have.

Hi Mark

The battalion boundary between the 47th and 52nd at Dernancourt was of great significance. There was, as you may be aware, a breakthrough in this battle by the Germans at this boundary which led to both battalions being outflanked and the support lines and front lines of the 47th being overrun. Both Colonels claimed the other battalion had given way and an inquiry was held to find the truth. The railway bridge and underpass which marked the boundary was in the 52nd's area and thus the finding rested on where the Germans had broken through first.

My book on the history of the 47th Decision at Dernancourt) is due out this year so if you would like to read it I won't spoil the surprise by letting you know the outcome of the controversy (which was still rattling around in the 1920's). Suffice to say that it makes very interesting reading and I found the research for this battle particularly fascinating. Your Grandfather may have been fortunate to be evacuated on the 3rd of April as the main attack on the 5th was a disaster for the 47th.

If you send me your details, I'll put you on my list. The book will be published as part of the Australian Army History Series.

Best wishes

Craig Deayton

Dear Pat

Certainly would be interested - sorry about the delay - I've only just got myself back on. I'm not sure how to send you my email offline but I'm sure there's no problem with including it here

Craig,

I have a photograph of Thomas Henry Kelly who served with 47AIF and was KIA at Messines on the 7 June 17. His cousin Edward Kelly is one of my "locals" and the photograph is from "The Herald" a newspaper published in Lisburn in N. Ireland. Another paper, the Standard, claims that he (Thomas) visited Edward's family at Christmas 1916 although there is no mention in his service record (AWM Series No. 2455/1 Barcode 3011455) of him having been on leave. The picture is too large to post but if you are interested PM an email address and I'll send it on.

Hi All

Edward Kelly KIA 1918 and Thomas Henry Kelly who served with 47AIF and KIA at Messines on 17 June 1917 were both my second cousins. I am compiling a war record of the Kellys for my family history but don't have much information at the moment. I would be extremely grateful for any information on the family or if someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance

I think you've outdone me on these men Steve, but if I come up with anything, I'll post it.

Best wishes

Craig

Peter,

Sorry not in particular but any bio detail on these men is always welcome.

Hi Craig

I've yet to reach my quota of five posts, so I cannot use the PM system as yet.

My interest in the inter-battalion boundary related to the 47th and both the 46/48th in early April 1918, particularly for the main attack on the 3rd and for the hand over between the 46th and 48th.

Looking at the different war-diary maps, the skectches in Bean's Chapter 12 there seems to be some varations also the comments in "Backs to the Wall" are an interesting perspective, hence the question about the accuracy and responsibility.

I'm still interested in any comments you or others have on the topic in general and, of course, what you say in your book.

Do you have an availability date as yet?

thanks

Mark

If there is anyone who would like a photo of a relatives grave then I would be more than happy to take one then post on forum or email to you. Just a thought, chances are I will take photos of all 47th graves I see whilst over there.

Im off on the 21st for three days then back to blighty.

Hi Robert

Thanks for your reply but I got F & B from the post above where it gives the names of 47th men who were also LH. F & B appears in the bio of quite a few of them.

Mate,

Because I deal with men from the LH who served in Egypt and Palestine I had to note those who also served in France and Belgium (F&B) and (G) Gallipoli)

Cheers

HI all

Has this book previously discussed in this topic been released & where could it be purchased?

Google - Battle Scarred: The 47th Battalion in the First World War by Craig Deayton.

Mark

Hello all.

How I have missed this thread is a mystery to me!

In this photo you will see the Grandson of Captain John Millar. His image on page 137 of The book 'Battle Scarred.  on the left of this image provided is the Grandson of Capt Millar. On the right is the Grandson of John Patrick Keenan 2668 A.I.F. Mentioned on page 183 of the same book. We met at the Battle of Messines Ceremony quite by chance, and linked up in London the following year.
