David,

As always you are a miracle of information and the Red Cross card gives the detail. Tucked away is his birth at Bedford . That's Bedford, Eastern Province, SA!

Coldstreamer, a photo in rugby days can be seen here http://www.rugbyrelics.com/Museum/exhibits/Thumbographs.htm#MILLAR It's a commercial site

Thanks to both

Stephen

Hi

I am trying to find information on my relative. Info I have is as follows, if anyone has any further info or if I am really lucky and photos would really appreciate help. Trying to get as much info for elderly Uncle.

Name: Wiliiam George Robinson

Regiment: 2nd battalion Coldstream Guards

Rank: Private

Service No.: 12360

Died: 14.09.16 - 16.09.16 near Ginchy (maybe battle of Morval or Lesbeoufs)

Hoping someone can help, would really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tony,

Welcome to the forum.

You should be able to get a copy of what survives of Williams service record from the regimental archive -see here on how to apply.

I presume that from what you posted, you have access to Ancestry, and that the date range for his death came from his Soldiers Effects record. In the absence of a service record, what it tells you is that a War Gratuity of £11 10s was paid. Using the work that Forum Pal Craig has done on understanding the scheme, his eligible war service counted from the outbreak of the war in August 1914 - though by number sampling his 12360 number would appear to date from September/October 1914. His Medal Rolls indicate that he first arrived in theatre on 17th March 1915. His Soldiers Died record is here

The war diary for the 2nd Battalion is available from the National Archives in two parts - see here. It will also be on Ancestry - search page here. For additional contextual detail it would be worth considering looking at the brigade and division HQ diaries.

On the concentration report in his CWGC record it says that his body was exhumed from map reference 57c.T.14.c.0.8 before being reburied at his current resting place. His original burial is likely to be much nearer to where he originally fell. Advice on reading trench map co-ordinates is here. This link should open up on square T.14, which by using the slider you can see how it fits into the modern landscape.

Good advice on researching soldiers is here

Hopefully a Coldstream Guards specialist will pick up on your post, and follow on later.

Good luck in your research.

Regards

Chris

thanks for the info. I will start looking.

If there are any Coldstream experts who might also be able to assist. Would love to try and find a photo (if possible).

Your best bet would be local newspapers.

Try the British Newspaper Archive.

Cheers,

Derek.

Looking for the 2nd Btn Coldstream diary entries from 17.03.1915 - 17.09.1916. Would like to build a chronological timeline of my great uncles service during his time from disembarkation to his death on 16.09.1916.

If anyone could help with a condensed diary for this time period, would be most grateful.

Thanks,

Tony

From the National Archives, the Brigade HQ diaries are here, and the Division HQ (General Staff) diaries here. They should also be on Ancestry - search page here.
