Guest Carol Anne Posted 30 November , 2014 Share Posted 30 November , 2014 Hi there I am very new to this site and looking for some help please. I am researching my friends Grandfather for her and trying to gather as much information as possible to present her with as she knows very little about him. This is as much as I have gathered so far : Albert Edward Faulkner, Lance Sgt, 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards, died of wounds in Flesquieres 29.11.1917 ( possibly battle of Cambrai ?) he is buried in Orival Cemetery France near Cambrai. I have tried but cannot find any details of the part played by the 2nd battalion in the battle of Cambrai. Anything at all about Albert and his role in World War 1 would help me build a picture and portfolio for my friend. Thank you all so much Carol

tullybrone Posted 1 December , 2014 Share Posted 1 December , 2014 Hi, If you use below link and use Coldstream Guards as the search field you fill find the 2 volume CG WW1 history is available for free download. The date of entry 26.8.1914 on the 1914 Star roll above suggests he entered France as a first line reinforcement (same as my gf) and would have joined 2nd CG "in the field" 4th Sept 1914. You can pay for a copy of his service papers via CG HQ for £30. Forum member Coldstreamer will also probably be able to assist re his service papers. rugbyremembers Posted 2 February , 2015 Share Posted 2 February , 2015 I am researching WA Millar, 3/Coldstream who was taken PoW on 13 April 1918 at Hazebrouck. He also happened to be the captain of the touring Springbok rugby team in 1912. Any snippets/tips gratefully received. Many thanks Stephen
Coldstreamer Posted 2 February , 2015 Share Posted 2 February , 2015 What rank is millar ?
rugbyremembers Posted 2 February , 2015 Share Posted 2 February , 2015 He was 2/Lt at Hazebrouck 13/4/18 when taken POW. Apparently was at Stralsund camp on the Baltic. Of seven officers taken prisoner on that unlucky 13th, he was the only one repatriated before the Armistice (23/10), which may imply he escaped. I cannot imagine being South African allowed him special pleading! krgds Stephen
Coldstreamer Posted 2 February , 2015 Share Posted 2 February , 2015 would suggest to me he was wounded or ill . Millar was demobbed 22.10.19 according to the regimental history he was on a draft to the 3rd btn 15th April 1918 which makes no sense given his pow date - i think it was really between the 5th and the 8th
rugbyremembers Posted 2 February , 2015 Share Posted 2 February , 2015 He was quite severely wounded in the Boer war, which makes his rugby career remarkable. So arguably that may have caused him -ill-health while prisoner, or as you say a second wound. Born 1884 so 34 by 1918, by no means old, so late draft interesting. rgds
David_Underdown Posted 2 February , 2015 Share Posted 2 February , 2015 This, WO 374/47700 MILLAR, Lieut W A is presumably his personal file. Red Cross cards http://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Details/22752/3/2/
