alanh Posted 2 November , 2007 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2007 Terry Am really grateful. Re grave, area is in old churchyard and is very overgrown due to proximity to retaining wall/path, so will probably be quite a time before grave can be markd Thanks again Alan

Drew-1918 Posted 15 December , 2013 Share Posted 15 December , 2013 Fantastic work on this soldier. It is a very moving story. I am very late into this thread, but since L/Cpl. Smith is buried in my local churchyard, I have a photo of the headstone which was finally put up. I can post here if appropriate. However, since I am so late into this, perhaps all those interested have long since got hold of such things. Incidentally, not really super relevant, but I think either my great-great grandfather or great grandfather would have dug the grave and stood by on the day he was laid to rest. Drew-1918 Posted 17 December , 2013 Share Posted 17 December , 2013 I wondered who had put them there. Thought it might have been the scouts.

Drew-1918 Posted 17 December , 2013 Share Posted 17 December , 2013 That's a good point. I noticed that his headstone seems to have got dirty very quickly. For example, it seems quite a bit dirtier than the other headstones across the road in the 'Canadian' Cemetery. I suppose that must be because the area in which he lies is much more overgrown than a normal CWGC site?
alanh Posted 18 December , 2013 Author Share Posted 18 December , 2013 The area concerned is right by the pathway to the church in the old part of the cemetery and is overhung by trees
