N.B.: Recent research has shown that Lance Corporal Smith is buried here. The Commission is in the process of marking his grave.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Plot C Row A Grave 15

Cemetery: ORPINGTON (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD

CWGC is still awaiting a report from the Area Inspector re the grave but they will contact you (alan) when it is at hand.

Am really grateful. Re grave, area is in old churchyard and is very overgrown due to proximity to retaining wall/path, so will probably be quite a time before grave can be markd

Fantastic work on this soldier. It is a very moving story.

I am very late into this thread, but since L/Cpl. Smith is buried in my local churchyard, I have a photo of the headstone which was finally put up. I can post here if appropriate. However, since I am so late into this, perhaps all those interested have long since got hold of such things.

Incidentally, not really super relevant, but I think either my great-great grandfather or great grandfather would have dug the grave and stood by on the day he was laid to rest.

That's a good point. I noticed that his headstone seems to have got dirty very quickly. For example, it seems quite a bit dirtier than the other headstones across the road in the 'Canadian' Cemetery. I suppose that must be because the area in which he lies is much more overgrown than a normal CWGC site?
