AB64 Posted 9 December , 2006 Share Posted 9 December , 2006 I was given this cutting from a local paper (I guess its from mid-1915 - mentions Dardanelles), a friend of my parents is linked to the family so they asked me to have a look at it and see what info I could add, I have made some notes below (based on the article, likely MIC's, the booklet about Wishaw and Cambusnethan during WW1, CWGC, Soldiers Died) - hopefully some members can add thoughts or comments. Ta Alistair Sgt John Hill Scots Guards, at front since outbreak, so I assume 1st Battalion MIC Probably - Henry John Hill, 2405, Sgt, Scots Guards Pte William Hill 8th HLI - ties in with coastal defence role Wishaw and Cambusnethan book has him as HLI MIC – William Hills 3300699, 30065, 241878, 29092, 22204, 18126, 6162 He is mentioned as a territorial I would guess early war, low number 6162 Pte Fred Hill Wishaw and Cambusnethan book has him as Royal Scots and Killed in Action (I can only guess the book has mixed up him and Francis) MIC – F Hill 23312, Fred Hills 7890 (HLI)/ 302157 (RS’s) I am guessing at the HLI/RS one as he joined the Territorials on the decleration of war and Cameronians or HLI were the 2 local units, plus with several brothers in the HLI it would seem a likely choice Pte Francis Hill Article 1st HLI Cambusnethan Landward Memorial in Newmains has Francis Hill (not listed as KIA, see above possibly mixed up with Fred) Wishaw and Cambusnethan book has him as HLI MIC – 8749, Frank, Private, HLI CWGC – 1st HLI, KIA 18/1/17, Basra Memorial Pte Charles Hill Article RSF Cambusnethan Landward Memorial in Newmains has Charles Hill MIC – 12248, Charles, Private, RSF CWGC – 6th RSF, KIA 25/9/15, Loos Memorial Pte Elie Hill Article 2nd HLI Wishaw and Cambusnethan book has him as HLI MIC – 12124, Elie J, Private/Corporal, HLI Pte Robert Armstrong Article Cameronians Wishaw and Cambusnethan book has him as Scottish Rifles twice wounded MIC – Roberts Armstrongs 19691, 34615, 20935, 16112, 10885, 10721, 8355

Guest pearl 1 Posted 30 May , 2008 Share Posted 30 May , 2008 hi i am intriged by this article as i am researching my family tree and i have this exact copy and the details that you have found out with me now. My grandmother was William Hilll daughter my uncle has been desperate to find out our tree and a member of his church Cambusnethan Old Parish sent this to him after seemingly having found it when clearing an old relatives house. Her name is Watt and we know there is some sort of connection but not how. I coulnt believe it when i typed in Wishaw & Cambusnethan book and your listing came up first. We have also found an article written 2 years later in 1917 by wishaw press and this gives details of Charles and Francis being killed it also gives details of others. one brother not mentioned in original 1915 article was Joseph Edwin Hill who was based in Germany (on his marriage Cert) as a gunner in the RLAI ? im not upto speed on regiments as in the family after having 7 in ww1 on our side we have not sent anymore to fight. I wondered if the person who asked you to look into this article was on the armstrong side or the hill i have looked into the family and am now through this looking at the army history. hope you can give me some help Pearl Dick (Carluke)
Heid the Ba Posted 30 May , 2008 Share Posted 30 May , 2008 Great article Alistair. My maternal grandfather was from Newmains, I'll speak to my mother and see if she remembers the family. Is the Wishaw and Cambusnethan booklet available anywhere? If not could you have a look for James S. Clark RAMC 64272. I'm struggling to find a unit for him. Thanks. Heid the Ba Posted 30 May , 2008 Share Posted 30 May , 2008 I'm sure that is him, but I'll check with my mother. He had a couple of brothers, any other Clarks at that address? I think there was Dick in the HLI. Thanks. Alistair, sorry for derailing your thread.
Rob Bulloch Posted 31 May , 2008 Share Posted 31 May , 2008 Hello Alistair First of all my apologies to for hijacking your thread, it is so very seldom that my old home town is mentioned on the forum that I could not help joining in, even though it had nothing to do with the original thread which was great by the way!! H D B. Yes there is another "CLARK" at same address. Robert Clark ASC. 45 Anderson Street. Cambusnethan. Single, survived the war. Cheers Rob. per ardua per mare per terram Posted 31 May , 2008 Share Posted 31 May , 2008 As no one else has mentioned it: John Hill's RMA record should be in ADM 159 at Kew.
Heid the Ba Posted 1 June , 2008 Share Posted 1 June , 2008 Sorry, my mother can't remember anything about the Hill family. It is a fairly common name in the area.
