Dear All,

Steve found me the Gazette citation for Col. AD Borton's VC.

Can any of you find the citation for Col. Edwards' award of the DSO, 1919 or earlier.

He was in the same columns (Pinega River Operations) as my wife's late father in Russia (Archangel) 1919.

Best regards,

George Major.

George. Difficult to be certain, as there are 20 Edwards' (and one Edwardes) in the DSO register, post 1st January 1916. Only one states he served in Russia: G Maitland Edwards, DSO 1.1.8. There is no citation - presumably a New Year's Honours job.

He is listed as:

b 13.12.82, married, 1919, Josephine, d of E A Mitchell Innes, KC; educ privately; Aspatria, Cumberland; Mining Engineer and Assoc.M.Inst.MM; 2nd Lt, RGA 1914; Lt RFA 22nd Divn; Capt RE 1915; Lt Col Oct 1917; on special mission to Washington June to Sept 1918; served Europ. War, Gallipoli, France and Russia; Croix de Guerre with palms; Third and Fourth Class Order of St Vladimir with Swords; Third Class St Anne with Swords; Officer of the Order of the Star of Rumaina with swords.

There's more in Who's Who - he commanded the 254th Tunnelling Coy, RE, and was at Russian Headquarters, Dec 17 - feby 18, and he lived at Hemel Hempstead.

Is that him, do you think?

To: Steven Broomfield.

Looks like G. Maitland Edwards was the man though I'm a little puzzled that he was at Russian HQ 12/17 to 2/18.

In my wife's late father's (then Captain AWC Major) time he was sent as one of three columns up the River Pinega March 1919. One Column was Borton's (VC) and another Edwards'.

In AWCM's MOD records is a section 'Special Services in Time of War or Peace' which reads:

Picked up live French mortar shell during a demonstration Archangel, February 1919. Thanked in Russian Orders by General Marousheffski and received letter from General Ironside.

Quelled uprising by 1st Battalion, Archangel Rifles in Archangel. Thanked by General Needham in Orders.

Recommended by Col. Borton VC and Col. Edwards DSO for operations in Zemstova against Bolsheviks in March 1919.

It's the Edwards listed that I'm looking for. I found 5 Gazette references for G. Maitland Edwards but none of them are definititively the man!

To: Coldstreamer:

What you say would explain why I have never been able to find a citation in LG for the middle one of the three MC's my wife's late father won as listed in his MOD records. It says: For services in the field, Bullecourt and is dated 24 December 1917 when no particular action was in progress.

To you both:

Im very grateful for the time you've spent on me. If any of the above promps further thoughs I'll be delighted to receive them.

Regards,

George.
