Stolen medals

Not sure if this is the right place to post.

I imagine stolen medals are incredibly difficult to trace. Would they have been defaced for sale so that the seller couldn't be traced? Or would they be sold to a dealer...I haven't a clue. Maybe they'll end up on ebay?

Two pensioners were conned out of all their savings and the old chap is particularly distraught at the loss of his father's medals...story here :(

I wasn't sure whether it was worth posting this but hey, you never know. Somebody here might have been offered them for sale.

Yes sad indeed but a sign of the times . It would be helpful if Name Rank No Reginment etc was given then perhaps some one may well spot them for sale some place and the scum traced whom did this .

Duly noted, having had a small collection of Medals stolen whilst on display @ Peterborough Museum in the 1980s,I appreciate what the folk have gomne through, the medals will probably "Reappear" on the market when the perpetrators consider it safe to "flog them on"{In my casethey reappeared @ Gloucester Race course,Militaria Fair, some two years down the line & as a result of diligence by OMRS Member,Mr Neil brown, who rememmber my list in a Journal, were eventually returned to me,& the miscreants apprehended & charged for many similar Museum thefts throughout the Midland area.

I expect your thieves will have seen the Medals as easy Money & will offload @ a local car boot sale, auction or via a local Coin & Medal/Antique dealer, they are not generally very bright...!

I hope they get them back.

Hello

I certainly think that you have done the right thing. As has been mentioned details of the recipient and other information would greatly help.

The more people who know about this the more chance there is of these items being recovered.

Having said this wasn't the East Surrey's Reg. Museum burgled some time ago?

Has any items from this theft surfaced?

Is there such a thing as a stolen medal register?

Regards,

Bob Norman

Is there such a thing as a stolen medal register

the OMRS & Medal News used to do a "Stolen Medals" Listing, quarterly & bi monthly;respectively, but presumably only of those stolen items directly reported to them by Members or Readers & sufficiently "On the Ball" Police Forces.

Pte Stanley Moore 24201

Royal Berkshire Regiment 5th Btn

KiA at Ypres 9/8/1916

These are the details of the man whose 90 year old son's medals were stolen at the end of November, along with £4k of his life savings...the medals are British and Victory.

If anyone here comes across the medals in any way, via a dealer, private sale, ebay etc, PLEASE get in touch with me, in confidence. These medals are the only thing Mr Moore has left of his father.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Wendy

  • 2 weeks later...

Hope you all had a very good Christmas.

Anyone have a clue how to go about putting appeals in the Medal News and do they have a website? I have put the same message on the British Medals forum and somebody mentioned Moulesmans, but I can't seem to find this. Anyone know if there's more than one Medal News publication?

Thanks,

Wendy

medal news http://www.tokenpublishing.com/contact.asp

omrs http://www.omrs.org.uk/

alternatively one of the myriad of medal and coin shops or online sites. I suspect there are two people at large.

the first , the oportunist, does not know what he has got so will sell to a local antique shop or may take 20 miles radius, or will sit on them till the heat clears.

the second, the specialist, knows exactly what he has got, hopefully he is a gambler and they will appear in the next few weeks on ebay or a 'not so straight' dealer.

the third, the doer, did the job for someone else, and they could well be sat on for a few years as part of a collection.
