Trebrys Posted 7 December , 2006 Share Posted 7 December , 2006 I'm trying to find information on John Robert Jones (203668) who was killed in action on 20th September 1917 whilst with B Coy of the 9th Battalion of the RWF. Would anyone know where he would have been killed on that day or have any information at all about the battalion's movements? Can the experts out there deduce anything from his service number of 203668? For me, they're just numbers but I'm sure they must mean something. He was a native of Ysbyty Ifan near Betws y Coed. Any help would be gratefully received. Diolch yn fawr iawn / Thank you very much, Trebrys.
sotonmate Posted 7 December , 2006 Share Posted 7 December , 2006 Trebrys You have probably seen a couple of maps in the Long Long Trail, which includes the start line for 3rd Ypres and the position of Gen Plumer's 2nd Army of which your man was a member (IX Corps/19Div/58Bde). They were ranged south east of Ypres and southward from there, down past where the Ploegsteert Memorial is now. Your subject may have been killed in the Battle of the Menin Road,20-25 Sept 1917. If you don't get resolution by mid Jan I will look in the 9ths War Diary, given the other things I have listed to do as well ! Mail me nearer the time to remind me if you don't get some kind soul here with a copy of the Diary already ! Best wishes, again, Sotonmate

Muerrisch Posted 8 December , 2006 Share Posted 8 December , 2006 Number indicates he was a Territorial [even though with a Service battalion]
Trebrys Posted 8 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 8 December , 2006 Hi Grumpy! Thanks for that.......but what do you mean? And how do you know? Trebrys. Number indicates he was a Territorial [even though with a Service battalion]
Muerrisch Posted 9 December , 2006 Share Posted 9 December , 2006 He was in a Service battalion, which 9th RWF was. His number is in the territorial series, started in early 1917 when TF men were renumbered: six figures, beginning 2 or 3.
Trebrys Posted 9 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 9 December , 2006 Thanks, Grumpy! Does this mean he enlisted in early 1917 then? Trebrys. He was in a Service battalion, which 9th RWF was. His number is in the territorial series, started in early 1917 when TF men were renumbered: six figures, beginning 2 or 3.
Muerrisch Posted 10 December , 2006 Share Posted 10 December , 2006 No, not at all..... TF men were given new numbers in early 1917, regardless of when they enlisted.
