Stebie9173 Posted 7 December , 2006 Share Posted 7 December , 2006 His service file at the NA would probably help. I can't see one in his name, but since there doesn't seem to be an officer with a similar name then this may be his with another transcription error. WO 339/39772 GRINTER F G, Lieut 1914-1919; 1966 Steve.
Stebie9173 Posted 7 December , 2006 Share Posted 7 December , 2006 Found him in the Times casualty lists - 19th October 1915. Probably wounded at Loos. There are 7th Northamptonshire Regiment men on the list (most not on the jpeg) who were definitely wounded on 26th September 1915 at Loos. Steve. jay dubaya Posted 7 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 7 December , 2006 Steve, what can I say....... appart from many many thanks, I certainly owe you one for that & his marriage to GG Winnie. On his MIC he was named as Hayton & he died in 1966 so I'm sure that F.G Grinter is the same as H.G Grinter, thankfully it's not a common name. Perhaps I'll get to buy you a pint or two one day! cheers, Jon ps are the service files listed online?
Stebie9173 Posted 7 December , 2006 Share Posted 7 December , 2006 No, not online generally. However, you can order them online (Same or next Day) at 10 pages at a time for £8.50, or use the Standard service which will get the NA to review the file and give you an Estimate for either printed copies or Digital Images via the Internet. Usually you will get: Enlistment forms (he will probably have OR and Officer enlistment forms) Casualty Form(s) - Which will include details of postings. Correspondence to/from War Office. Medical Board Reports - These often have very good detail of a man's injuries (where, when, how) All that will probably total at least 20 to 30 Pages, so it could get expensive. You will probably have to order it in batches. In the files the first two or three pages are lists of correspondence, then it gets into his career. There will also be old-fashioned carbon copies in the file which you probably won't need as they often repeat information on other pages. Both may contain nuggets of information tyhat may not be in the rest of the file, so if you dodn't have them copied you may lose out on a bit of info. Generally, however, these parts of the file are superfluous. If you go to the Catalogue search and type in Grinter and WO339 in the relevant boxes you will get the record on the Index. Click on the name to go to the page and then "request this". From there you can decide what service you want. Steve.
