george french Posted 6 December , 2006 Share Posted 6 December , 2006 Is there an easily available list of the regiments involved at Gallipoli. I am trying to trace my Grandfather`s war records and because of a family dispute over the spelling of his christian name and whether he had a middle name i am trying to narrow the medal list down before visitig Kew. I know he survived the Gallipoli campaign.. thanks for any help

MartinWills Posted 10 December , 2006 Share Posted 10 December , 2006 The alternative is "British Regiments at Gallipoli" by Ray Westlake which give a full breakdown of the units and there whereabouts on a day by day basis.
george french Posted 13 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 13 December , 2006 The alternative is "British Regiments at Gallipoli" by Ray Westlake which give a full breakdown of the units and there whereabouts on a day by day basis. Thanks again Martin... I tried the Gallipoli website and think i struck lucky.. it looks as if the only S G French from the medal cards that served in a regiment on the list eas in the bedfordshires which would make sense. I noticed the list on the Gallipoli site didn`t mention eg Army Service Corps, Royal Engineers,Royal Artillery, Army Medical Corps.. I assumed they would have been present....would these have been included under the other regimental names? or would the the British Regiments at Gallipoli be more complete? thanks again George

trajan Posted 6 July , 2016 Share Posted 6 July , 2016 I just found another listing which seems more comprehensive, but only gives regiment names not battalion details... See: http://gallipolidardanelles.com/research/brigades-regiments-and-battalions-engaged-at-gallipoli/ I should, from fairness, add I was simply trying to track down if the 3 West Riding were involved at all

Thanks Bill, that's what I thought. A very nice but overpriced 3 WR HQ with matching scabbard number has been offered to me with the usual 'probably a Gallipoli capture / souvenir' spiel. I checked what I could and saw that 3 WR was a Reserve Bn., but wanted to cross-check other sources just in case. Of course, bayonets probably moved around a lot in the GW, from one unit to another, but I just wanted to be certain of probability / possibility factor with this one. And so, it's a 'possibly'! I'll post the markings at some future date on 'Arms' - but was frankly amazed that in 'this day and age' there was no obvious or reasonably reliable internet page with a short summary list of exactly who was at 'Chanakkale' in 1915! michaeldr Posted 6 July , 2016 Share Posted 6 July , 2016 The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) were represented at Suvla by their 8th (Service) Battalion which was part of the 32nd Brigade in the 11th (Northern) Division. They landed on the peninsula on 6th August and evacuated on 18th/19th December 1915 Battle honours – 'Suvla' – 'Landing at Suvla' – 'Scimitar Hill' – 'Gallipoli 1915' details from Westlake's book mentioned earlier in this thread. The 1/Duke of Wellington's was in Chanak during the post war 'Crisis' of that name - see page 27, of the OH booklet 'The Occupation of Constantinople 1918-1923'

The 1915 information is there on the GA website, but logged under 'Order of Battle' - see http://www.gallipoli-association.org/campaign/order-of-battle-mef/oob-august-offensive/

As my wife says, I am often too impatient and so I should have searched further...
