Founded in August 1914 with the principle that recruiting would be restricted to public school ‘old boys’, the volunteers gathered at Hurst Park racecourse in a spirit of youthful enthusiasm. A more sombre mood soon set in. Despite many of the original volunteers leaving to take commissions in other regiments the battalion, now officially the 7th Middlesex, remained an elite until its disbandment in 1917. The climax of the Battalion’s war came on 1 July 1916. Close to the Hawthorn Redoubt Crater are two cemeteries sited on either side of the Auchonvilliers – Beaumont Hamel road. They contain row upon row of stones marking the graves of members of the Public Schools Battalion. The author, shocked by this discovery, has spent ten years researching the history of the Battalion and the events of that fateful day as they affected it. The result is a fascinating and moving record of a very uniquely British battalion.

Shame there is a photo of 1st East Lancs on the cover. ;)

:D Paul , the book will be available apparently on the 15th February 2007 . Amazon currently have it available for pre-order at a knock down £13.19 . I'm about to place my order and can't wait ! I have an intense interest in the ' public schools ' Middlesex batallion through my grandfather and this is a subject that i myself would love to write a book about in the future . Regards , Steve .

I am a little concerned over the blurb. It is surely the 16th Middlesex and not the 7th, which was a Territorial battalion. The battalion was disbanded in February 1918 and not 1917. Hopefully these are just publisher's glitches.

Yes, I'd noticed that; what with this and the cover photo, it doesn't bode well.

How is your fusiliers book coming along Charles?

I also have more than a passing interest in this unit - through my grandfather. He was subsequently commissioned and joined the MGC - I am trying to find out as much as I can about him. I will read this with interest.

Thanks,

Nick

Hmmm. If its Pen & Sword for pre-publication publicity they grafted my title onto the cover and title words for a book on the Manchesters. Made my heart skip a beat though the book itself, when published, was of course correct.

If it is them maybe they've done something similar here?

ps, for the record I was/am very pleased with my relationship with P&S.

I got the email explaining the delay as well. I have been waiting for Holte's Battle Atlas for 7 months now, so I hope it's not going to be a repeat performance.
