tommie Posted 6 December , 2006 Share Posted 6 December , 2006 (edited) Medal index card also shows service as D/34066 Corps of Dragoons. Can anyone help with his MIC, it states Discharged Civil Conviction 17/02/1920 medals forfeited. DCM Restored Does this Mean he only got his DCM back??? Many Thanks Tom Edited 3 June , 2009 by ww1_dale_boys
eltoro1960 Posted 8 December , 2006 Share Posted 8 December , 2006 Tom It looks like he was discharged for getting in bother with the 'Polis'. The court pages in the Evening News or other local papers could be a good source. It must have been a fairly serious offence to empty him as lots of soldiers had (probably still have) criminal records. Not too sure how you could access the Sheriff Court records for 1920 but I could probably find out though. The badges on the collar look like the Imperial Eagle of the Royal Scots Greys. Malcolm Posted 8 December , 2006 Share Posted 8 December , 2006 This info will be in the National Library in the newspapers of the time which list court information. Aye Malcolm

John John Had a look at the West Lothian Courier archives, found Robert had been up at Linlithgow sheriff court in late 1919 for a breach of the peace at his father’s house. In the article the sheriff is noted as saying Robert used to give the court a lot of trouble in the past but they had not heard from him from some time (as he enlisted in the Army at the outbreak of War), he also stated that Robert had done splendid work with the Army and had been decorated for Gallantry, but when he had a drink he was a nightmare the sentence was probation for three months. At the end of it he stated that Robert would have to be careful or he would loose the medals he had worked so well to earn. I will check the courier archives for 1920 and see if he had got in any more trouble. Cheers Tom
steve4969 Posted 11 April , 2007 Share Posted 11 April , 2007 Hi guys hope you dont mind me dropping in to your conversation, having read it i wonder if you could offer me some advice or point me in the right direction. I am researching my G grand father who was also in the Scot greys. I am trying to work out why he changed his name from john Dick to Alexander Scott i have spoken to his son who is in his 80's and he seems to remember his father being a bit of a black sheep, i have written to Edinburgh Castle and they told me he had 10 lines in his register, for various misdemenours, which they pointed out was a lot, he also served time while in France was wounded twice. Any ideas where i sould start with this one Regards Steve Scott
eltoro1960 Posted 11 April , 2007 Share Posted 11 April , 2007 I don't know at which point John changed his name , but assuming it prior to this man enlisting, then this may be Alexander. Medal card of Scott, Alexander Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Dragoons GS/3954 Private Corps of Dragoons D/12409 Private Dragoons GS/3954 Private If you visit the castle you will be able to view and note down what they have listed, this would certainly list his name and service number to confirm the above. Ten lines sounds like a lot of discipline infringments but even the mildest mannered of laddies could fall foul of an NCO / Officer for the most trivial of matters, late for parade, dirty kit, breaching standing orders (having a fly fag is a favourite). More serious offences like being drunk on duty, AWOL, asleep at your post could land the man in very serious trouble depending on where the offence occured. If you find out more at the Castle then please post it, you might find it beneficial though to start a seperate post as it makes it easier to search on later. Also meant to say local papers are a useful source for misdemeanours. Cheers
steve4969 Posted 12 April , 2007 Share Posted 12 April , 2007 John, thanks for the pointers, that is my G Grandfathers details, I have written to castle to see if i can get a photo copy of the page. I think maybe i need to pop into my local library and try and look up some old newspapers, i know he changed his name proir to the war, another wee mystery i have is that i have a photo of him as a corporal in the 8th Kings Hussars, i have no record anywhere of him being a cpl but doubt very much he would have put on the uniform just for a photo? what do you think
