For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as battalion intelligence officer in obtaining valuable information, and keeping up liaisons to the companies. When the enemy got round the right flank he ran down the line with instructions for retirement, and by his rapidity, and the nformation he gave company commanders as to the situation, he enabled many battalions, who would otherwise have been surrounded, to fight their way out. Throughout, the ground was swept by shell and machine-gun barrage.
