Matthew Posted 5 December , 2006 Share Posted 5 December , 2006 I have been asked for help regarding a man who, it is known, served in the Great War but little else is known about his service. All that is known is that he came from the Isle of Man. As a starter I thought it would be useful to begin the search with the most likely regiments and therefore would be grateful for any advice in respect of which regiments actively recruited on the Island. TIA M
John_Hartley Posted 5 December , 2006 Share Posted 5 December , 2006 The island had its own territorial force which was assigned as a company to the Cheshires and, I would guess, that the Regiment remained the most active recruiter. Found this book with a quick Google and it should give you more info:- Isle of Man and the Great War John

HERITAGE PLUS Posted 5 December , 2006 Share Posted 5 December , 2006 Matthew The 7th (Isle of Man) Volunteer Battalion, The Kings (Liverpool) Regiment had its HQ at Douglas.IOM A Service Company was formed by this Battalion in 1915, and posted to the 16th (Service) Bn of the Regiment. In October 1915, this company was transferred to the 3rd Cheshires, and was renamed the 1st Manx (Service) Coy. In January 1916, it was transferred to the 2nd Cheshires in Salonika. Given the Regimental connection with the Island some Manxmen would/could have enlisted in other Battalions of the Regiment. However remember that during the War area of residence did not necessarily have a direct link to the Regiment or Unit that a man served in. Can you post you mans name? Matthew Posted 6 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 6 December , 2006 HP, The man in question is Jimmy Cashin; family memory says he served on the Somme. He was born on the IOM and lived on Athol Street in Peel towards the end of his life. TIA Matthew

pbrydon Posted 7 December , 2006 Share Posted 7 December , 2006 The book " A Military History of the Isle of Man" by B.E. Sargeaunt gives a list of officers of the Manx Home Guard and listed amongst the 2nd Lieutenants of the 2nd Manx Battalion is J.E. skypilot Posted 24 March , 2010 Share Posted 24 March , 2010 Whilst the Manx Service Company (eventually) was part of the Cheshire Regt, the King's Liverpool Regiment was the primary posting for local men and consequently that regiment suffered the highest number of Manx casualties. However, manxmen could be found serving in virtually every unit of the Commonwealth forces. In the main, Manx soliders serving in infantry units served in units from the NW i.e. Lancashire and Merseyside.
