John Johnson Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 Please point me in the correct direction Ladies and Gentlemen. An old lady at my branch 178 RCL has asked me to find any information on her Grand Fathers winning of the Military medal, sometime in 1918. John M (Mays) Ely I take this opportunity of thanking anyone who replies to this message. Thanks John
welshdoc Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 Firstly get the name rank serial number and regiment, post it on the forum and wait as one of the residents finds the london gazette entry. This will also give you the home town . then try the local library for details from old newspapers, You might be lucky.
Stebie9173 Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 There are four ways to find MM details: 1. Medal cards. Medal card of Ely, John Mays Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Garrison Artillery 283356 Signaller Gunner http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...;resultcount=14 These will give date of London Gazette and often exact unit served with. However..... 2. London Gazette LG 23-7-1919 283356 Sig. Ely, J. M., 109th Siege By. (Portsmouth) . http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveVi...;selHonourType= Since the London Gazette entry is post war, then all the information that is likely to be on the medal cards is given in the Gazette, so you probably wouldn't get any more info for your £3.50. 3. War Diaries. These will possibly state when a MM was won (probably only to the month rather than a specific day). On some occasions, I have seen a specific mention and on rarer occasions a full citation. Date-wise I think we are looking at the last month or two of the war, or else a much delayed earlier award for some reason. 4. Unit histories. These will often mention gallantry medal winners, but there are not many Artillery Brigade histories around. 5. Local newspapers. Scanning the local newspapers around the time of his medal (late 1918 to even early 1920, in this case as it may have been presented to him some time after the war) can often produce a short piece on his medal, which can mention the act. Some libraries have indexes of WW1 newspapers. Hope this helps, Steve

Pete L Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 Hi Johno John Mays Ely is listed in the 1901 census, as a school boy, aged 12, in the Duke of York’s Military Asylum in Chelsea. It says his place of birth was Southampton. There is a John M Ely, aged 2, in the 1891 census, living in Millbrook, Southampton. Parents John M and Mary A. Father was a Sergt. Instructor in the 2nd VB Hampshire Regiment, plus two sisters. It looks as if he had the army in his blood. This time he is listed as being born in Winchester. And there is a birth registered to a John M Ely in Winchester in the Dec (qtr) 1988 PM me with an email address and I will send you the images to pass on.
