Jerrymurland Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 Slightly off topic I know but was not sure where to post this query. What are the best sources for accessing newspaper archives for the period 1900 - 1925? I've Googled until the cows come home and not got very far. Can anyone please point me in the direction of any good archives, don't mind subscribing if I have to. Jerry
Stebie9173 Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 There aren't that many online yet. The Times Digital Archive is online and can be accessed through your Library website, providing they subscribe. Ancestry has a few online, but generally in the 1800s, though one of the Staffordshire papers during WW1 is at least partially online. Offline, then the British Library Newspaper Archive at Colindale, North London has some sort of copy of nearly everything. I haven't really chased down that many online sources myself, though. Steve. CarylW Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 The Scotsman has an excellent archive online of old editions from 1817-1950, covering many events of national interest for the whole of the UK You can search the archives for free, but need a subscription to view the articles The subscription is well worth the money. I had one at one time http://archive.scotsman.com/ Caryl

Pighills Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 Depending on what you're after, your local library (or indeed any library nationally - just email them) is a good resource for newspaper archives as well as the fantastic resources at Collingdale. The plus points of your local/national library is they wont charge as much for a look up if you are unable to go in person. They will send photocopies of any archives found on request. Jerrymurland Posted 2 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 2 December , 2006 What newspaper articles are you looking for in particular? Caryl I'm researching the impact of the Boar's Head Action of June 30th 1916 on the towns and villages of Sussex that supplied the majority of the men in the 11th, 12th and 13th Royal Sussex Regiment battalions. Although it was 'only' a feint to draw attention away from the Somme offensive there were very heavy casualties. Any newspaper accounts, casualty lists - although I have SDGW - etc will help me get a picture. Jerry
