strongbow Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 My Great Great Uncle was a gunner on HMS Challenger and died on the 8th March 1915. Does anybody know what action the ship was engaged in on that day? He is buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in Cameroon. We are going to the National Archives in the New Year, but any information before that would be very much appreciated by me and my father, who has caught the family history bug! Many thanks. HERITAGE PLUS Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 Strongbow As part of the East African Campaign Ships and armed craft of the Allied Navies visited the whole of the Cameroon sea board and establishing bases for small craft to patrol the rivers where navigable HMS Challenger was instrumental in preventing a land attack on DUALA, which had been captured from the Germans in 1914, on 21 February 1915. I am not aware of a specific naval action on 8 March. Dave
kin47 Posted 1 December , 2006 Share Posted 1 December , 2006 Hello Acting Gunner Albert E. Lewis, RN, died of illness on that date. His death was not related to any enemy action. All best don
