michaelbeer Posted 30 November , 2006 Share Posted 30 November , 2006 I am attempting to trace the family history of my Grandfather George Beer who served in the Kings Royal Rife Corps R/8273 and the Tank Corps, 75991, between 1914-1920. I have his Medal Card but I am struggling to find his date or place of birth. I have found a possibility on the 1901 Census but without a date or place of birth I am unable to prove his identity. Where should I look to try and find his date and place of birth. Thanks
ian turner Posted 30 November , 2006 Share Posted 30 November , 2006 That would be on his army service records, if they still exist (2/3rds destroyed in WW2). Available on mictofilm at Kew. Better to go down the family history route, work back from death certificate. Have a look at Genes Reunited (if you have not already done so). Do you know his appx age during WW1, and area of birth? If you want to post all the details you have on him, there are a few genealogically minded folk on here who might help. Ian
Lorac Posted 30 November , 2006 Share Posted 30 November , 2006 Names of other family members might pin him down, ie: children, wife, parents, siblings. If you can list any of those I can take a look on the relevant census's for you. Regards Lorac

clarkc_bpo Posted 2 December , 2006 Share Posted 2 December , 2006 for what it's worth, I was in a similar position - Gt-Granfather, name known, age at death unknown. 1st Step was his son's (my grandpa's) death certificate. This gave his parents full names (including maiden surname). From this, I found their marriage certificate (on Scotlandspeople but you have similar sites too) which gives age at time of marriage. From there, a search for my gt-granfather (admittedly I had his town of birth from SDGW) found his BC, and a census from 2 years earlier gave the full details of his siblings etc. I've since been able to plot his life through bmd records and census returns, although anyone with an idea how to get enlistment records (A&SH at the time, Falkirk) other than at Kew could give me a shout... Hope it works for you too ! regards Clark.
