Terry Denham Posted 28 November , 2006 Share Posted 28 November , 2006 There is no J H Brown (or Browne) listed in the GRO Overseas Death Index for the Coldstreams.
Terry Denham Posted 28 November , 2006 Share Posted 28 November , 2006 There is the J Brown 10369 mentioned above - died 1914 - in the GRO Index. Looks like a possible error in SDGW - not unusual.

Terry Denham Posted 28 November , 2006 Share Posted 28 November , 2006 It looks like you have 10369 J Brown. If you want to get his death certificate, he is ref no. G.1.324. However, I am not sure this will help you. Have you downloaded the MIC to see if there is any other detail?
Coldstreamer Posted 28 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 28 November , 2006 Hello no MIC coincidence that there is another brown with similar number - but both numbers and names are on the 14 star roll and soldiers died but why is the other not there either ?
Terry Denham Posted 28 November , 2006 Share Posted 28 November , 2006 Perhaps he didn't die. SDGW has some of those. Thought to be dead but turned up PoW. The MICs may have some annotations.

Coldstreamer Posted 3 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 3 December , 2006 His papers confirm that he was from Totnes and that he was killed 2/11/14 and have "deceased" stamped on them in big letters. There is a reference quoted C2 61 135871-1 14/3/16 - any ideas ??
Coldstreamer Posted 3 December , 2006 Author Share Posted 3 December , 2006 There is no J H Brown (or Browne) listed in the GRO Overseas Death Index for the Coldstreams. Terry what exactly is this index ?
Terry Denham Posted 3 December , 2006 Share Posted 3 December , 2006 The GRO produced an Index of all UK Army, Navy and RAF death certificates issued 1914-1921 for all servicemen who died overseas (it also lists the UK deaths for RN men). This index gives name, rank, number, unit/ship, year of death and the DC refence number (which, if quoted, gets you a cheaper death certificate). It does contain some typos but, on the whole, it is accurate. In theory, it is a complete list of men who died overseas although I know of a couple of men buried in CWGC cemeteries in France who do not appear to be in the list. However, it is possible that they are listed under other names. You can access the Indices via 1832online.com for a fee each time or buy the complete disk on CD. I have the latter. It is invaluable for quickly finding out if a man did die and have a DC issued - and it is taken by CWGC as being authoritative. I often use it for confirming service numbers. Terry Is this available at a reasonable price (i.e the sort of price that might enable it to find its way into Santa's sack)? Supplier?
