Pettsy Posted 27 November , 2006 Share Posted 27 November , 2006 Hi can anyone please tell me if in WW1 the R.E Signal Corps would have had brass shoulder titles? Would they have been R.E SIGNALS ot R SIGNALS? What is R SIGNALS, my friend has some? Thank you. La Pettsy
max7474 Posted 27 November , 2006 Share Posted 27 November , 2006 The RE Signal service would have worn the usual brass RE shoulder badges but could also have a blue and white arm band identifying them as a signaller. The Royal Corps of Signals was formed in 1920 so is post WW1. Their RSIGNALS shoulder titles were worn post WW2 and are still worn in anodised aluminium on certain oreders of dress but not in normal uniform. mark holden Posted 27 November , 2006 Share Posted 27 November , 2006 WW1 RE Signal Service also wore a cloth title 'Signal Service' looks to be white on black or dark blue in the photo I have. I also own 3 Signal service brass titles that I am sure are also RE WW1 Vintage, but others more expert may disagree. Pettsy Posted 27 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 27 November , 2006 Hi Mark, I do have one R.E Brass shoulder title. My great grandfather was with the R.E, a Pioneer with the Signal Corps. So I was hoping to find something with SIGNAL CORPS, or R.E SIGNALS on for my collection. Best wishes La Pettsy

max7474 Posted 27 November , 2006 Share Posted 27 November , 2006 A quick email to Royal Signals Museum curator amy provide a defintive answer as to dates. I think you will find that they probably wore all 3 types at some time or another. I have seen photos of Signal service and plain RE titles on RE Signallers in WW1. The RE Signal Service was formed in 1908 but RSIGNALS as a title was definately post 1920. This is a good site. http://www.fairmile.fsbusiness.co.uk/signals.htm Alan

Raster Scanning Posted 21 December , 2006 Share Posted 21 December , 2006 My Gt Uncle was a RE Signaller, he is pictured on the far left with his section above the beach at ANZAC. He was called John Wainwright and his Gallipoli diary is on the mother site. The officer and at least 1 man wear the blue and white armband mentioned above. Graham Stewart Posted 21 December , 2006 Share Posted 21 December , 2006 I have recently got hold of a copy of Army Orders 1911 with references to the RE Signal Service and if my memory is correct the T.F. elements did actually wear "T/RE/Signal Service" in brass. Amazingly though this wasn't restricted to RE's only, as I remember seeing a small group photo many years ago of T/RE's, NF(TF) and DLI(TF) and all wore on their parade uniform the title "Signal Service", which inidicated an HQ element. If anyones interested I'll copy these AO's later on for your perusal. Graham.
