steve fuller Posted 27 November , 2006 Share Posted 27 November , 2006 Hi Pals Before I start transcribing the next war diary on my list for my site, is anyone aware of websites or individuals who have already done it, to save me duplicating work? Cheers Steve
shaymen Posted 27 November , 2006 Share Posted 27 November , 2006 Steve It is on my list to do , but some way off yet, I have got the whole diary. Get transcribing mate - save me a ton of work on my next project - loads of Herts guys to do. Although the only other person here I can think of that may have transcribed it is Charles Fair - maybe drop him a PM to find out. Take care mate Glyn
Max (UK) Posted 27 November , 2006 Share Posted 27 November , 2006 I would be really interesting in seeing this too if anyone can help - I just 2 days ago discovered a new relation and he was in the 1st Btn, Herts Reg. Private Earnest Alfred George Callaby 269546 Herts Regiment, 1st Battalion Killed 31-7-1917, France I hope to find what was going on / what they were doing, when he was killed. steve fuller Posted 27 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 27 November , 2006 Glyn - yea, cheers! Seriously, if you have the diary already, would you copy me on it please? Would save me an hour or two photo-ing it (in my dreams - after a row with archive staff about not wanting to waste half a tree and many pounds printing it off Ill end up with photos of a bloody PC screen) and in return it would be made available to the Internet public of you like the thought of that? No worries if not of course - Ill do it the other way! Max - I may be wrong but off the top of my head isnt this the attack that left no officers and a Sgt in charge of the Btn? I honestly don't know, I've just made the link to Earnest Callaby and have not researched them at all. But thank you for the info, it sounds terrible. Charles Fair Posted 5 December , 2006 Share Posted 5 December , 2006 Max - I may be wrong but off the top of my head isnt this the attack that left no officers and a Sgt in charge of the Btn? Thats the one - it has come up on the forum a couple of times over the years. The casualty toll was heavy. Of the bayonet strength of between 600 and 650 the War Diary shows the following figures: 7 Officers 29 ORs killed 5 ORs missing believed killed 4 Officers 132 ORs missing 3 Officers 68 ORs wounded and missing 6 Officers 223 ORs wounded 2 ORs died of wounds ______________________________________________ 20 Officers 459 ORs (estimated) Therefore, from those who took part in the action, the battalion suffered casualties of 100% of the officers and up to 75% of the other ranks. 2 Coy suffered particularly badly: it "went in about 120 strong, and only about 18 came out." From GWGC/SDGW I male it a total of 145 other ranks and 10 officers either killed or died of wounds. Steve - I have sent you a PM. regards Charles
