steve140968 Posted 25 November , 2006 Share Posted 25 November , 2006 Hi , can anyone tell me whether there is a diffinitive list of regiments / battalions in action on the 1st July 1916 , many thanks , Steve .
Desmond7 Posted 25 November , 2006 Share Posted 25 November , 2006 MIddlebrook has them in the index for the specific Somme region on that day at the back of his book. But as for units in other sectors who I am sure saw some form of action that day .. God knows! And back to the Somme - McCarthy's 'Day by Day' has the blow by blow .. but I'm sure someone will tell me he missed someone out!
John_Hartley Posted 25 November , 2006 Share Posted 25 November , 2006 Steve Assuming you're not also including other sectors (the war didnt stop elsewhere of course), then I'd add Westlake's "British Battalions on the Somme". The Official History presumably has much to offer, although I havnt got the volume. John
steve140968 Posted 25 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 25 November , 2006 Thanks Desmond and John , what i should have said is in the Somme sector . I was just wondering for research purposes whether a list had ever been compiled where maybe casualty numbers could be cross matched for each battalion , cheers , Steve . John_Hartley Posted 25 November , 2006 Share Posted 25 November , 2006 Middlebrook lists battalions suffering 500+ casualties (topped by 10th West Yorks with 710). Not all fatalities , of course. It would be possible to use Soldiers Died to establish fatalities for each battalion. John
burlington Posted 26 November , 2006 Share Posted 26 November , 2006 Try Barry Cuttell's 'One day on the Somme', ISBN 1870384 679. He cross-references all the Divisions, Brigades & Batallions, plus trench names, and the activities in the various sectors on 1 July. A bit of a bible really. Essential. bmac Posted 26 November , 2006 Share Posted 26 November , 2006 It would be possible to use Soldiers Died to establish fatalities for each battalion. Not with 100% accuracy as it does not differentiate between 1st and 2nd line battalions. This is why Bell's 'Soldiers killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme' is not 100% accurate. For example, there were a number of 2nd line battalions of the London Regiment in the line in other sectors which suffered casualties on the 1st July 1916. This only became obvious to me when I did my database of 56th Division casualties sourced from SDGW and found men inexplicably buried miles away from the Somme front. They were all from the 2nd line battalions of the ones fighting at Gommecourt.

Cuttell's book does many things but, sadly, listing all battalion casualties is not one of them. A job for someone!

bmac Posted 26 November , 2006 Share Posted 26 November , 2006 Fine, I was following the flow of the discussion which seemed to have got beyond this point some 12 hours earlier.
