Remembered Today:

Zeppelins over London

Evening all.

I did try asking this question by hijacking someone elses thread.

That didn't work did it? Sorry Simon!

I hope that this does using my own topic title.

Does anyone know of areas or streets hit by the zeppelins in London?

More specifically I am reffering to information in my grandfather's letters of 1915, where he writes of there being damage in The Strand.

Also his sisters reported having had their kitchen ceilings falling in due to blasts which may have been in the Marylebone or Acton areas.

Was there ever a list of dates compiled with the attacked areas and damaged buildings in London?

I'd be very glad if anyone can come up with something on this.

Hi Tony,

there's a whole book on it - originally written in the 1920's:

German Air raids on Britain 1914-1918 by Joseph Morris.

Naval & Military press has reproduced it.

As an historical document in its own right, its tone and approach makes for interesting reading, though I can't say it was gripping - though at some points the hair raising nature of this part of the war did come through.

I'm no expert on it, but if you have any questions, I'd be glad to do some look ups - it has some maps of the routes taken by the craft, and can at times go into detail in its narrative about the damage caused to Britain. By modern day standards, the language is odd when describing the damage and casualties, but it nevertheless is a valuable source.

Three other books you might like to look at are:

The Air Defence of Britain 1914-1918 by Christopher Cole and E F Cheesman, ISBN 0 370 30538 8;

The Zeppelin in Combat by Douglas Robinson; ISBN 0 85429 130 X; and

Zeppelin! by Ray Rimmel, ISBN 0 85177 239 0.

The books have comprehensive details of German airship raids, including dates, targets, participating airships, casualties and the damage caused by the raiders.

I hope that this helps.

Thanks for your help on this subject, Doogal, Gareth and and those very interesting postcards Montbrehain.

I'll pay a visit to my local library for the books that you recommended.

I'd certainly be glad of some look ups Doogal.

According to my grandfathers letters, there were air strikes at Leytonstone in August 1915 and also in The Strand in early July 1915 and another at about the same time in the Ealing district. In February 1916 he mentions another attack on London, but does not say where.

Best wishes,

Tony

Thanks Dave.

I hadn't seen that thread.

There's some great stories and information on that one!

Cheers,

Tony
