I wonder why did the soldiers get caught on the barbed wire. Did they get shot before they fell on the wire? Or did they just run into the wire and die. ?

Before an offensive paths would be cut in the wire for the advancing troops, soldiers who were shot around these paths would have fallen onto the wire. Alternatively soldiers would have attempted to cut uncut wire with wire-cutters, stationary they would have provided a target for hostile gunfire or been exposed to artillery fire. Then there is also the possibility that bodies, or bits of bodies would be blown onto the wire by artillery fire.

Im sure I read somewhere that even today a padded up soldier would sometimes crash the wire inorder that others could get over, also in the dark or amidst shell smoke they might not have even seen the wire then as Jon says for the rest
