AndyJohnson Posted 24 November , 2006 Share Posted 24 November , 2006 I am a little confused about what Regiment Pte Thomas Green G/72705 kia 29/08/18 belonged to. CWGC says Regiment: The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) Secondary Regiment: London Regiment Secondary Unit Text: Posted to 1st/24th Bn SDGW says Regiment: Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) Battalion: 1/24th London Battalion MIC says South Staffordshire Regiment 48471 Private (was initially in 3rd SS, this can be ignored) 24th London Regiment G/72705 Private The Queen's Regiment G/72705 Private Can I infer that he was in the West Surreys and moved to 1/24 London (but same number ??) OR is this an error - was he in 1/24th (County of London) Battalion TF (The Queen's) and the reference to the Royal West Surrey Regiment is erroneous as they are The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) - too many Queen's ?? Also searching SDGW for "Surrey Regiment, Royal West" gives a Battalion option of "1/24th London Battalion" (and returns 66 men) - 1914-1918.net shows no such battalion for the Royal West Surreys but of course there is in the London regiment. Is this general confusion or just mine?? Regards Andy
jim_davies Posted 24 November , 2006 Share Posted 24 November , 2006 Andy, The 1/24th londons were associated with the W Surreys. Not sure how it worked but see: http://www.1914-1918.net/TF_renumbering_infantry.htm Jim
AndyJohnson Posted 24 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 24 November , 2006 Thanks Jim Is there nothing that's not covered by this site? I have never found that page on TF re-numbering. It must have kept a team of Management Consultants busy for ages! It all makes much more sense now Regards Andy
