cherubdc Posted 23 November , 2006 Share Posted 23 November , 2006 Hello I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is a Buffs cap badge? It looks like one to me but it's not really that clear, but if it is then I am confused because this a photo of my Gt Gt Uncle George Henry Rockliffe who served with the 26th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He is named on the CWGC with service no. 64090 and also on NA with same service number apart from a GS in front. But no mention of the Buffs I have a had a quick look at fusilier badges and they seem to be flames of some kind, but I am fairly new to this so if it is a fusilier badge and not a buffs badge then please excuse my lack of knowledge. Jonathan Saunders Posted 23 November , 2006 Share Posted 23 November , 2006 It looks to me like a Buffs capbadge - I dont know if any badge experts on here can say for sure. Also I am collating those references of "Costen" ... I have found a few mentions of the name and will email you tomorrow (hopefully).
birkettm Posted 23 November , 2006 Share Posted 23 November , 2006 Definately not the Royal Fusiliers as you would expect the flaming grenade with a rose in the middle of it. Does look like the Buffs though. Could even be the Royal Berkshire Regt. Only other remotely similar one is Montgomeryshire Yeomanry and i dont think its that! My money would be on the buffs. marksimner Posted 23 November , 2006 Share Posted 23 November , 2006 Did he transfer from the Buffs to the Fusiliers or vice versa? Not unusual for this to happen. If you can get a copy of his MIC from the National Archives you could find out. Mark
cherubdc Posted 23 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 23 November , 2006 Thanks all I have had the picture a while now and never noticed the badge until today, I think because it says that he was Royal Fusiliers I never really thought to look. I haven't downloaded the Card yet to see if he was transfered, no money till tomorrow! I'll do it tomorrow and have a look....I know with my Gt grandad his card listing on NA had both regiments(Buffs and then the Royal Fusiliers) showing before I downloading so I presumed that all were like this e.g if a man had served with more than one battalion it would show up on the NA search before having to download anything. Also I am collating those references of "Costen" ... I have found a few mentions of the name and will email you tomorrow (hopefully). Thanks for that Jon, I'll look forward to hearing from you. I have been looking at my tree again today and they seem to have lots of children so there were plenty of them around, but it seems by the late 1800's they moved down to Murston/Sittingbourne area. One of My Gt Grandad's brothers may have possibly fought with the West Kents as well if its the same man on the NA. I know you are the man for West Kents so this is his name if its of any interest to you.. Albert Henry Costen. If you want any further info let me know and I'll post in a more appropriate place because I seem to be going off topic a bit here! Dawn
Michael Posted 24 November , 2006 Share Posted 24 November , 2006 Dawn My money's with the rest of these guys that it's a Buffs badge George was a Sittingbourne lad and was previously in the Buffs with service number 4701. Because the Buffs aren't mentioned on his MIC I would assume that he transferred before leaving the UK. His Buffs number is an old Territorial number so presumably he transferred before the numbers changed to 6 digits in 1917 Mick
Barnsey Posted 24 November , 2006 Share Posted 24 November , 2006 I'd almost bet the Buffs cap badge I have in on the desk in front of me. Definately the one & only East Kent Regt.
cherubdc Posted 24 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 24 November , 2006 That's good, that brings the count to 3 family members that have served with the Buff's at some time or another. Mick, I should have known you would come through with some more info on him, I only found out about George from family tree stuff and then happened to come across this photo(looks like a newspaper clipping) of him on the Sittingbourne Remembers website, re-checked with my family tree and it indeed was him. I'd almost bet the Buffs cap badge I have in on the desk in front of me. Definately the one & only East Kent Regt......Only almost Barnsey??!! haha, not letting go of that one easily then!? Thank you to you all....its nice when little puzzles can be solved. Dawn
Jonathan Saunders Posted 24 November , 2006 Share Posted 24 November , 2006 Albert Henry Costen. If you want any further info let me know and I'll post in a more appropriate place because I seem to be going off topic a bit here! TNA entry is almost certainly your AH Costen. There are two other Costen's that served in RWKR on my listing - tehse are Bert and Ernest (ring any bells?) I have the 1851 and 1881 Census entries for Costens living in Rainham if you want them. Also I have found some references to Bill Costen who worked at Rainham Co-op and a Costen (or Coston) was the name of the first baptised child recorded in a Methodist (Weslayan) "Preaching Room" in Lower Rainham in 1844. Happy to send through full details if you want - you can send me your email address via members and I will send the full articles. Jon
