Royal Welch Fusiliers

I have requested information before on this forum and thank everyone for their kind help and suggestions.

I am researching my grandfather Robert Ralph Challinor, born 1882. He was in 2nd Btn Royal Welch Fusiliers and his date of disembarkation was 12.08.1914. I have his medal entitlement and have been provided with the details off the SWB lists ...... "enlisted 10.10.03". I had always been told my grandfather was a regular solder before the Great War and this could be the start of looking for him further. However, I am not sure where to start looking.. Does anyone have any suggestions?

All help appreciated.

7956 Pte Challinor R is said to have disembarked 12th August but this is propbably a clerical error unless he was kept on the troopship overnight because the entire battalion disembarked on two dates: 11th for HQ, A and B Coy, 13th for C and D Coy. His clasp to 1914 star was never claimed.

I have no trace of any service in India with 2nd Battalion, which proves nothing.

Hello Barbara (or is it Nev?)

No doubt you will get some good advice here soon.

If you're thinking about his pre WW1 service then the Forum of the excellent RWF site below may be a good starting point.

Thanks for that info.

When you say his clasp was never claimed, what does that refer to? He died in 1922 and whatever my grandmother had was lost in the blitz in Liverpool in WWII.

Cheers

He was entitled to the clasp for the 1914 star but, if not still serving at the end of the war, or already dead, a soldier had to go to the post office for a form, fill it in, have it countersigned, before the clasp and roses were issued. The Medal Roll of the 1914 is annotated for soldiers issued with the clasp, his line is not annotated. And, no, its too late for you to claim it now!
