petestenning Posted 22 November , 2006 Share Posted 22 November , 2006 Does anyone know where the Married quarters were in Horsham West Sussex around 1915 to 1917? The reason i ask is my Grandads brother was in the Royal Sussex regiment about that time and was married, and according to a living relative lived in married quarters in Horsham. He was private Shadrach Stenning and his wife Ellen. She came from County Kilkenny formally Ellen Cleary. I also know he was injured and returned to the uk, and that he was taken back to Ireland to converless at the family home in CO. Kilkenny before being returned to Israel where he was KIA at Beersheva in November 1917. Peter

Paul Reed Posted 22 November , 2006 Share Posted 22 November , 2006 There were no married quarters in Horsham; the only military facilities in the town was the Company HQ of C Company 4th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. Because that was a Territorial Force unit it did not require such facilities. The only married quarters the regiment had were at Chichester, and they were for regulars only. Paul Reed Posted 22 November , 2006 Share Posted 22 November , 2006 Ah - found your man! Name: STENNING, SHADRACH Initials: S Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Lance Corporal Regiment/Service: Royal Sussex Regiment Unit Text: 1st/4th Bn. Age: 32 Date of Death: 06/11/1917 Service No: L/7514 Additional information: Son of Meshac and Annie Stenning, of Butts Common, Kirdford, Sussex; husband of Ellen Stenning, of Ballygub, Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: G. 70. Cemetery: BEERSHEBA WAR CEMETERY He was a regular soldier, and while there were no married quarters in Horsham, his wife would have been entitled to a seperation allowance etc. Maybe she lived in Horsham because of his then connection with the 1/4th? Originally he would have served with the 1st or 2nd Battalions; and he enlisted before 1910 by his number.

That is interesting that he was a regular and that he joined prior to 1910, i know he had twin sons Shadrach & Stanley , i also know from the 1901 census that he was unmarried and living at home in 1901. I also know he left for Alexandria in 1915 and that he went by train to Devonport from Bedford, which is eerie as i now live 11 miles from Bedford . Does anyone else get a cold shiver down the spine and the hairs stand up on the back of the neck when you find or discover something about one of your relatives . Peter PS he enlisted in Chichester.
