Guest Falco Posted 30 December , 2012 Share Posted 30 December , 2012 I have a great uncle who was also killed on 27th May 1918 with the 8th Battalion MGC. I have a cousin who has researched the circumstances. Apparently, the 8th Battalion were at a place called Beri-au Bac (google it) which is right on the river. They were probably killed during the initial barrage. My cousin has a copy of the German Artillery barrage plan. He too (my great uncle, not my cousin !), is remembered on the Soissons Memorial. I think the 8th Division, to whom the 8th Btn. MGC were attached pretty well ceased to exist after the following German infantry assault.

david west Posted 5 September , 2014 Share Posted 5 September , 2014 My Grandfather Ernest Albert West DCM, was CSM of A Company, 8th Battalion MGC at the time of the Aisne battle on 27th May 1918, he was taken POW at Berry au Bac and held at Langansalza POW camp until Jan 1919. Colin W Taylor Posted 5 September , 2014 Share Posted 5 September , 2014 Billy, David The war diary can be downloaded from the National Archives for £3.50 - it's at reference WO95/1702/4. There is detail regarding what the battalion was doing in late March 1918 but sadly no details as to the death of Major Robinson. There is also no mention of CSM West's capture in May though this period is also covered in some detail. Kind regards Colin
Billy1963 Posted 5 September , 2014 Share Posted 5 September , 2014 Thanks for the reply. I believe Major Robinson had been part of the Northumberland Fusiliers, so I have emailed the museum to see if they have a record of his awards. Thanks again
Colin W Taylor Posted 6 September , 2014 Share Posted 6 September , 2014 Billy I presume this is his DSO Citation. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30561/supplement/2931 I'm not sure about his MC though. Regards Colin
