Guest KevinEndon Posted 22 November , 2006 Share Posted 22 November , 2006 Did you know that there was a chap aboard M1 when it sunk called Harding, nothing unusual in that I hear you say, well out of 5 brothers 3 were killed in WW1, Levi Farrington, James Henry, and Homer Harding, 1 was killed on M1 the other returned to Endon. wulsten Posted 24 November , 2006 Share Posted 24 November , 2006 Tragic episode M1, you will have to forward his details kev, if i remember rightly it was a design problem that lead to the loss due the gun mounting, this should get some response ? sotonmate Posted 25 November , 2006 Share Posted 25 November , 2006 K/W, There is some suggestion that the M1 sunk because it was hit by a passing cargo ship whilst under the surface. An article I have read collates paint traces on the stem of the cargo ship to the paint used on the M1. See: http://www.rnsubmus.co.uk/general/losses/htm then scroll down to M1. Best wishes Sotonmate

wulsten Posted 25 November , 2006 Share Posted 25 November , 2006 Thats correct if remember rightly m1 had large encassed gun, the mounting actually passed through the pressure hull and was damaged by the collision whilst submerged, this was shown when she was located and investigated by a dive team
